Value of 1974 Colt 5" 1911

I've decided to sell a good portion of my firearms (I don't have all that many) and one of them is a 1974 Series 70 Colt 5" 1911. It doesn't have the box, but I would say it is in 95% condition with the slide being high gloss blue.

A fellow I know has one from 1975 that looks just about like mine and swears he could get $1,500 for it. I know that that is far higher than what it would actually bring, but I don't know what the realistic value is. Gunbroker seems to be all over the place much of the time, so, I thought I would ask here to see what you might think. Thanks.

Joe, prices are all over the place as you say. Were it mine, I would put it on Gunroker with whatever I thought to be a reasonable starting price and see where it goes. I've occasionally sold a gun on GB. Some sold at my starting price and some really surprised me as to how high they went. I didn't use a secret "Reserve", so potential bidders knew my lowest price and could decide right up front if they wanted to bother with bidding at all......ymmv

I say a good used one. Should bring what a new one cost today.
In 1972 I paid 154.95 for a new Colt Combat Commander in Denver. So price of new. I would think be a close guess . As to resale value

In my area that gun is around $ 1,000 - $ 1,250 probably.....but i'd sell it locally and probably ask $1,500 ...and back off as needed for a serious buyer...

I have several of them as I like the Colt MK IV Series 70 guns. A nice clean gun typically is in the $1,000 to $1,200 range and the Colt MK IV Series 70 Gold Cup National Match versions typically in the $1,500 range. While I would not rule out the $1,500 your buddy mentions I believe he would be hard pressed to get that much unless the gun was the Gold Cup version. A Google will bring up plenty of them for sale.

I am looking for one in 9mm as I have one in 38 Super.

One thing to consider is how important the condition grade is.
We all have a tendency to over grade our own guns.
So, from my own experience, be prepared to have your pistol insulted by prospective buyers.
But try not to take the offers you get personally. :o

An ad on GB is as close to fair market value as you will receive. The pain of "mail order" or not in person sale, is more than offset with the broader audience.

That being said, based on what I see, it should sell for 900-1500 depending on who is looking at the time you are presenting it for sale.

Of course we are assuming excellent condition.

Good luck which ever way you decide.

Rich
