Well I wasn't planning on getting another 1911 until I recieved a fax today on the new Valtro M1998-A1. My distributor is selling off his first lot of these pistols for $1125.00 CAD (739.30 USD). I've heard alot of great things about the Valtro, and was more than impressed buy the price.
Should I buy one?

Got a picture of one in front of me. Looks like any other 1911, notable features are; fromt slide serrations beaver-tail grip safety, adjustable rear sight & skeletonized trigger. What caught my attention was the price $739.00 seemed really low. Am I wrong?

The mysterious Valtro 1998A1...

ArmySon asked:
Has anybody seen one? I've yet to see one in person OR a picture of this mysterious Valtro.

Ask an ye shall receive...

I shot one. It was very tight, very accurate, immaculately finished with lots of little touches. Nice crisp trigger.

One FTF when chambering from slide lock, otherwise reliable through 50 rounds.

Things I didn't like:

Huge gas-pedal ambi safeties. Biggest I've ever seen (but I haven't seen many "competition" safeties.)

Adjustable sights only.

Check out the August 2001 issue of SOLDIER OF FORTUNE
magazine for a review by Mike Miller. He loves this baby.

He says price will be $ 1,199.00 retail but is well worth it.

No mention of a website for Valtro but you can call them

I did glance at the article in Soldier of fortune and if I read it right it said that the owner of Valtro is none other than the son of Armand Swenson. If this is true and the quality of his weapons are anything like his fathers weapons were they will be a very good buy indeed. If anyone does happened to purchase one of these how about putting it in a ransom rest and giving us a report on how it shoots at 25 and 50 yards. It would not suprise me if the lucky new owner finds this weapon capable of shooting 1 inch or smaller groups at 25 yards. Many custom .45's are quite capable of this level of accuracy. Makes you wonder why people even consider buying lesser weapons which often cannot be gunsmithed to such a degree of accuracy. Owning just one outstanding custom made weapon is certainly more satisfying than owning a dozen or so out of the box factory blasters. A .45 has just the right balance and weight to enable one to drill the bullseye out of the target. Not to mention the aesthetically pleasing look of a nicely forged framed and blued weapon.
Couple this with an outstanding trigger pull that puts the 1911 in an elite class of pistols which few others share. W.R.

The man in question is John Jardine. He is actually the nephew
of Armand Swenson. He has been a pistolsmith for 35 years -
with many of those working with Mr. Swenson. He was hired
as a consultant by Valtro to improve quality control on their
entire line of guns.

After years of working on 1911s, John had what he considered specifications for a perfect pistol. With his new position at Valtro, he agreed to have them build his gun. Mr. Jardine insisted on complete control over the manufacture of the pistol so that it would meet his high standards.

The SOF reviewer (Mike Miller) says that this is a production model that looks and shoots like a custom gun. If you are looking for a 1911, take a gander at the Valtro.
