vacationer buying a gun in New Orleans

So I'm going to be spending a few weeks in New Orleans in about a month. I'm something of an amateur photographer and I wanted to do some exploring in some, perhaps, questionable areas during day light hours. I don't intend to put myself in danger but I've heard the area can be unpleasant even during normally safe hours.
My CWP is accepted in Louisiana so I was thinking that I could maybe go there, buy a gun and carry that for the length of my stay and then either find an FFL to send it back to SC or just sell it upon my departure.
Any thoughts?

You can buy (pay for anyways) a handgun there but you can't pick it up there, they have to send it a FFL back in your home state. Why don't you just take one with you?

Just take one with you.

I lived in N'arlins for quite a while, which "questionable areas" are you thinking about exploring?

and as to where I might be headed.

I was there a decade or so ago and took pictures all over. In the city proper and up to around a half hour out in a number of directions. I'd planned on revisiting many of those sights to compare and contrast.

Well that's pretty specific, could you be a little more general?:)

I've been down there since the storm and am familiar with the state of most of the neighborhoods. If you don't mind saying which parts of the city you will be hiking around in, I could probably give you a heads-up about a few common dangers.

I poked around water. Around Algiers and Metairie (off Esplanade, I think.) Westwego. And the French quarter and the Garden District. I enjoy driving and getting lost. I've had many good times at remote little places I wouldn't have found had I kept to the main road.

When I lived down there last in the summer of '06 the water was still pretty sparsely populated. A Lowes was about to open, though, and everyone seemed pretty excited. I bet they have been building like mad since then.

As for the quarter, if you are walking down Canal or a parallel street from the general direction of Bourbon, and you see the casino, STOP. Wandering into the little armpit of a neighborhood past the casino can be very dangerous to your health. Even in the middle of the day. I forget what it's called, but the neighborhood is only about 500 square yards of mostly modern, blocky little buildings populated by an incredible number of gang punks.

If you notice groups of young guys wearing oversized, plain white t-shirts over on that side of the quarter (plain white hooded sweatshirts when it's cold), keep an eye on them and head the other direction as much as possible. It may have changed since I was down there last, so it's not a foolproof thing, but that was the popular gangwear for those guys fairly recently.

The streets between Bourbon and Rampart (Congo Square) are generally ok during the day, but not so much at night. If you are going to The Funky Butt on Rampart at night to catch some outstanding music (and you really should), take a cab. The Treme neighborhood starts past Rampart and it can be a little rough as well. Not nearly as bad as the Haiti-like squalor over by the casino, though.

That's enough for now. I'll try to think of some other helpfull stuff...

Algiers can get abit hairy as well. There's been a big spike in crime there in the past year. Metairie is still for the most past ok and the Quarter area during the day is fine.

The one thing to remember though, bad things can happen anywhere and at anytime. In the New Orleans metro area, this is more of a motto than a cliche. Be alert, be armed - especially if you're carrying around camera equipment. It'll be fine.
