Yeah, this refers to CCW, but we'd all better hang together or . . .

If you read the report on the Militia and Police Committee meeting last month, you know that HB 1479, which would have repealed the prohibition on carrying a concealed handgun into restaurants, was killed by the committee in a very close vote. We're trying to resurrect this bill for the 2001 session that starts next Wednesday, January 10.
Delegate Lee Ware, whose district lies just to the west of Richmond, indicated an interest in re-introducing the bill, but he needs a bit of encouragement. Please call and politely request that he become the bill's patron, especially if you are in his district. His phone #'s are at the end of this email.
If he or his staff ask why you think concealed carry in a restaurant is a good idea, you can tell them that:
- no concealed-carry permit holder had used his firearm inappropriately in a restaurant prior to the law's change in 1995.
- carrying any firearm, concealed or not, while under the influence of alcohol or drugs is already illegal. Permit holders know this so they don't drink anyway when they patronize restauraunts.
- in 1999 almost 100 vehicles were stolen from restaurant and club parking lots in Virginia according to the state police's Uniform Crime Report. In addition, thieves looking for items to steal broke into over 19,000 vehicles statewide. If concealed-carry permit holders are forced to leave their pistols in their vehicles while eating at a restaurant, there is an increased likelihood that their guns will eventually end up "on the street" versus if it had been retained safely in their possession.
Delegate Ware's contact info is:
Home office: 804-598-6696
Legislative office: 804-698-1065
Let's light up those phones, and please remember to be polite. Pro-RKBA groups in Virginia have been fighting for this bill for five years. The Republicans told us "get us in power and we'll give it to you". Well, they got into power last year and nothing happened. Now it's time to hold their feet to the fire.
