V10 Ultra Compact Questions

I have been toying around with trying one of the little bitty .45 autos for several months. Really love the Kimber Pro Carry and Elite. The small Springfields look good too. I have been putting off buying any of the small .45s due to concerns of reliability, accuracy, control, etc.

Well, my dealer owed me some money from a credit I got from a defective rifle. He owed my $659.00. He had a Springfield V10 Ultra Compact (the light weight aluminum frame) in stock for many months. He has no trouble selling the less expensive non-ported compacts, but the ported ones are slow to move. The ecomomy out here is terrible. Well I got the pistol at wholesale and have been shooting it.

I noticed there are two entire pages devoted to the ported barrel models in the manual. In particular, only shoot factory ammo, no reloads (lead?), no +p, etc. Is this all just CYA babble for liability purposes or is there a real reason not to shoot lead reloads in a ported barrel?

Also, I am having some trouble finding a load that groups well. Only have about 300 rounds through the pistol so I am still optomistic about finding something that shoots well. It bugs me no end that my old G27 shot tighter groups at 25 yards. All BS and nonsense aside (please) what kind of groups can I expect to get out of this pistol at 25 yards? Let's not talk about my ability. Let's just talk about reasonable expectations. Also, I just have to get some custom work done whether the pistol needs it or not. I am going to start with a decent trigger job. Any of you know of a pistolsmith who specializes in the sub compact pistols?

By the way, this little baby is a blast to shoot, literally. The recoil is manageable and the muzzle flip isn't that bad. You just have to get used to the quarter stick of dynamite going off in your face when the fire ball boils up out of the ports.

I had the steel one and It shot about 2" at 15 yards but at 25 I have no clue. The best grouping for me came with the Federal White Box and the CCI both where 230 grains.
I think the lead is because there is a chance of some shavings flying out the ports.
Hope it helps.

Ankeny, my wife has one, (steel version though) and we both really like it. The warnings about ammo isn't in our manual, but I'd imagine it's trying to keep gases from shooting out too much. I can't say the "quarter stick of dynamite" going off has ever occurred to us. Neither me nor my wife have ever been disconcerted by shooting it, so I guess it's just never occurred to us. Accuracy hasn't been much of a concern, as it's more that "combat accurate", but I do remember shooting it a 15 yds. quite a long time ago and getting a roughly 1.5" group. Also, her trigger, though a bit heavy, is clean as a whistle. You know, if you're really not happy with it, I'd take it off of your hands (since you only paid wholesale anyway).

Dream on, not for sale. I am very pleased with the pistol. I was shooting it after sunset and that's why the remark about dynamite.

I am getting groups around five inches at 25 yards and I was just wondering if that is about what I should expect. The only complaint I have is that the point of impact is high and way to the left. No it isn't me, two other guys shot it off the bench with similar results. By the way, it may not be a tack driver, but it is fun to shoot and runs well for a pop gun. I am thinking it will be my new carry gun.

well in that case if you aim for the face you will hit the left ear !
Anyway I tried WIN USA and Federal Classic 230g that produced 2" groups at 25 yrds.
I would change the sights and check the barrel for scratches.
I bought mine for $400 %99 condition. good luck

My wife has one and I am thinking of getting one for myself... But I dont want the ventalations... Just the Ultra Compact is fine for me. Porting has its pros and cons.

I just delivered a Colt/Caspian LW Officer to a customer. What a great little gun! I was tempted to keep it for carry for myself. I put top-of-the-line components in this piece, along with a complete ss Colt Officer top end. We'll shoot it for groups and report back. He's only had it a week.
