V-Max v Nosler b/tip.

Any one got any comments on comparisons between these two? I am planing on using them in my .243 (75 Grain and 70 Grain) Ive heard that you tend to get more weight retention from the V-max and therefore that its not so explosive. Comparing the two in factory loaded Rem and Fed the V-max altough 5 Grain heavier looks to be a shorter bullet? the overall length from cartridge base to tip is much longer in the fed.

I've found it to be the opposite, that the Nosler tends to be of heavier construction and tends to have a bit more weight retention. I've cross sectioned the NoslerBT and the Vmax and found that the Vmax has a larger amount of it's interior cavity filled by the polymer tip insert, the larger tip in turn means a larger hollow cavity as well as the polymer tip acts more like a log splitter when it's driven down into the core on impact.

The Nosler seems to be of heavier construction and can take more velocity where as the Vmax is lighter construction and might not be able to be driven as fast as the Nosler.

50grn Nosler on left, 40grn Vmax in middle, and Sierra BlitzKing on right. I would have cross sectioned a 40grn Nosler but I didn't have any on hand at the time.

I'd think that you'd find a `better?' comparison between the "B-Tip" and an "A-Max" rather than the "V-Max" since the "V-Max" by definition is a `Varmint' bullet. Having said all that *I* have a definite preference towards the "V-Max"es over the "A-Max"es since, for the time being, the majority of *my* shooting is `Varmints' and I've found that the "V-Max" does the job I want done. (IE: In the case of `pasture poodles' and others that size I want maximum `explositivity?' for a quick kill. [The `minor?' fact that it also gives them `reversible?' fur coats is only slightly in `second?' place. {GRIN!}] In the case of approximaely coyotte sized `varmints' I appreciate the way, for the most part, there is a small entrance wound and little, if none, exit wounding. It's `the boiler room', so to speak, that I want the most `action' to occur.) Now *if* I was going after something bigger I'd then most likely be using the "A-Max" bullets since what I've seen from various friends results the "A-Max"es seem to do a better job even though they both work. (*If* I finally get `free' this next fall and actually get to go Elk hunting like I want to I *may* be `singing a different song', and then maybe not. {WAN GRIN!})

It sounds like he's more concerned with an explosive varmint bullet. 70s should fly real well from a 243Win, I'm waiting to get a 243Win so I can do some 55grn Noslers and 58grn Vmaxes, at that point construction between the two won't matter with some 3800fps of velocity when using bullets that light.

I compared the Vmax to the Nosler because the Vmax is the bullet I use the most for varminting, people didn't understand why I was such a diehard Vmax fan until I showed them the difference between the Nosler and the Vmax construction. I'm not too interested in the Amax except for maybe target shooting, I full well know that the Amax is a heavier construction bullet and that's the last thing I want for dusting varmints. Want explosive? The Vmax should be superior to the Nosler BT or the Amax.

My experiences have shown that for maximum muck and guts the Vmax and the BlitzKings are the rounds to use and are rarely beaten.

To assure that you create the maximum amount of "splatter" on little vermin like squirrels or prarrie dogs, do what I do and don't aim for upper torso shots, instead aim for what I have lovingly named "The Crap Factory" where all the guts are balled up and compacted into a nice squishy mess where when the bullet impacts it is given the most opportunity to expand as violent as possible.

Another explosive bullet I can recommend is the Speer TNT bullet(comes in a 70grn weight if I remember correct), if you can find it loaded for the 243Win it should be similar in performance to the Vmax or BlitzKing in it's ability to make a total mess out of vermin. Speer states that the TNT shouldn't be driven any faster than 3300fps so I'm not sure if the 243Win is too hot for the bullet or not.
