VIRGIN, Utah (AP) -- This tiny southern Utah town has enacted an ordinance requiring a gun and ammunition in every home for residents' self-defense.

Most of Virgin's 350 residents already own firearms, so the initiative has lots of support, Mayor Jay Lee said.

Residents had expressed fear that their Second Amendment right to bear arms was under fire, so the town council modeled a similar measure passed by a Georgia city about 12 years ago.

The mentally ill, convicted felons, conscientious objectors and people who cannot afford to own a gun are exempt.

Then what's the point? Ridiculous law.

I'm a little surprised at the exemption for people who can't afford a gun. Maybe they need some kind of gun stamps. ;)

So maybe like an EBT card that is good an the local FFL? :D

I wonder if they came up with it on their own, or if they modeled the law on Kennesaw, GA.

Now if only Vermont can pass that law requiring $500 from people who do *not* own guns....

I don't think so, Eric.

I believe it's more of a statement than anything; a thumbing of the nose at the federal government. I also believe that those provisions were placed in it, in order to alliviate the fear of its possible enforcement for those who really could not afford (or just choose not to own one using affordability as an excuse) a gun.

Gee, I wonder why they'd think something like that ? Sounds like a good enough law to me, I rather it be a mandatory buy then a mandatory turn in.
