My wife is a state delegate. We just got this e-mailed to us. Hatch isn't very popular among the Utah Republican delegates, and may not survive the convention. There is a similar resolution for governor Mike Leavitt.
-------------
RESOLUTION REQUESTING SENATOR HATCH TO SUPPORT CONSERVATIVE PRINCIPLES
Whereas, Senator Orrin Hatch ran a presidential campaign based upon wanting to be president "so we can get the best judges, bar none, because it's been the judiciary that has saved this country and the Constitution year after year"; and
Whereas, Senator Hatch, as head of the Senate Judiciary Committee, has supported ALL liberal Clinton nominees as judges, including Supreme Court justices Steven Breyer and Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and activist judges Richard Paez, Marsha Berzon, and Margaret Morrow; and
Whereas, Senator Hatch could have opposed these appointments and the continued undermining of the principles of liberty enshrined in our Constitution; and
Whereas, Senator Hatch sponsored Senate Bill S10 which would have used the RICO act to punish gun dealers with 20 years in prison for making two innocent paperwork mistakes and would have forced all gun dealers out of business; and
Whereas, Senator Hatch supported the Lautenberg Domestic Gun Ban which disarms gun owners for life for small infractions (which could be as slight as spanking a child or grabbing a spouse) and which ban is an unconstitutional ex post facto ban that can be imposed without a jury trial; and
Whereas, Senator Hatch sponsored and is actively pushing the Juvenile Crime Bill that would put a parent in prison for five years for failing to give written permission to his child when that child goes shooting with a friend or relative and that child is allowed to discharge a firearm with a clip of greater capacity than 10 rounds; and
Whereas, Senator Hatch has been quoted in the Congressional Record (May 11, 1999) as saying: "The administration -- and several of my colleagues -- have called for more gun control. I plan to offer and support many of the proposals that have been discussed"; and
Whereas, Senator Hatch Introduced S3 in 1994 that would have allowed government agents to conduct searches and seizures in violation of the 4th Amendment (if they act in "good faith") and would have removed incentives for officers to secure a warrant in most cases; and
Whereas, Senator Hatch supported the Anti-Terrorist bill which allows phone tapping without a warrant from a judge; and
Whereas, Over 90% of Senator Hatch's campaign contributions come from outside the state of Utah, which causes one to wonder to whom the senator is beholden; and
Whereas, Senator Hatch is more concerned about the non-problem of flag burning than with the real problem of the erosion of our sacred Constitutional rights; and
Whereas, Senator Hatch pretends to be a conservative only during the years he is up for election and consistently fails to behave like a conservative during the other five years; therefore, be it
Resolved, That we delegates request that Senator Hatch seriously consider changing his ways and become more supportive of Republican principles or consider joining a party that more closely represents his views.
Resolved, That we delegates request the Davis County Republican Party Chairwoman to transmit this resolution to all elected officials and party officers.
