Utah governor honoring policeman for heroism

I just heard on CNN that the Utah governor is honoring the policemen who gunned down the goon in the Salt Lake City mall. I think that's great, BUT.....

The instant question that came to my mind was, "would he be honoring them if they had been CHL holders?" I somehow thing "No" would be the answer.

Utah Governor honoring Policeman!

If he really wants to thank these very courageous Policemen.... Give them Tax Free Status for life!!! :)

Make it something that will really mean something in the years to come!!!:D

either that or half priced donuts ;)

Why do you say that?

Well, ask yourself: Can you honestly see a modern day politician standing in before an audience in front of the mall with news cameras in front of him with 4 CHL citizens of the city of Salt Lake City seated next to him as he says:

"My fellow Utahans, we are gathered here today to honor these brave citizens who exercised their right to keep and bear arms and engaged Joe Killer in the ________ Mall two days ago. Jack Hayes, Robert L. Dabney, James B. Bohnam and Benjamin F. Terry came to the mall to shop, see a few friends and maybe get a bite to eat. These men, who had nothing in common except the guns they carried, suddenly became involved in a shooting which otherwise would have cost the lives of dozens of innocent victims had they not been present. To you three gentlemen, as governor of the sovereign state of Utah, I honor you this day. To you three gentlemen, the people of our state honor you this day. Your names will be etched into the cornerstone of this secton of the mall where the shooting took place. Above it will be a plague honoring your names for the next 100 years.
Thank you gentleman, and God Bless you.

(round of applause)"

Can you see this happening? Can you see a modern day politican openly applauding the non-LEO gun bearers?

I can't guarantee it, of course, but I would be real surprised if in a similar incident, CCW'ers weren't honored also if they were instrumental to resolving the issue. I don't think they would receive the same exposure as the police did in this incident (politicos HAVE to be seen honoring the uniformed heroes) but I don't think their participation would be swept under the rug, either.

Perhaps it's a bit cynical but the various government entities are using these brave police officers to prove that the government is doing good things for the people, protecting them from evil, etc. And from the police administration's point of view, things like this don't hurt a bit when they are trying to wring a few more budgetary dollars from the city/county. If ordinary citizens had stopped the shooter, there isn't much in it for the politicians, so, lower profile kudos would result.

Wow, at first sight, I thought this was going to be a kudos thread for a fine officer. Perhaps the moons of Jupiter had all aligned, cats and dogs renounced their distaste for one another, and peace fell upon the earth. But, alas, like the metaphors, this was not to be the case.
Maybe, one day.........

Seems that the media has very little to say about this event. This cop saved lives yet I do not even know his or her name. Yet, you can bet your last dollar that this tragedy would be on the news 24/7 if it had happened at a school. Why is the media so quiet about this? Is this because a cop used a gun to save lives? And why is Anna (may she rest in peace) and Britney more news worthy than this story?

Haven't been around much have you?

I came for the same reason, but nope just more flatulence about how "they" get all the gravy and we have to gnaw the bones

Many incidents in different states have involved CCWs coming to the rescue and they were honored as much as cops are. As was said, what was the name of the officer who interrupted his lunch?
What was the name of the gunman?
$10 says you know #1 long before you even thought of #2

Pearl Mississippi
Palm Bay Massacre
The last mall shooting
All involved private citizens who came armed to the aide of others and all were recognized by the media and PDs
Frequent stories of shop owners that defend themselves swith guns are broadcast here in Orlando without prejudice

I for one don't mind it when the sheriff cautions against doing police work on our own. It's common sense advice that is routinely given out on this forum

And why is Anna (may she rest in peace) and Britney more news worthy than this story?

Why are Bitney and Anna worthy of news coverage...PERIOD. I don't care who the father of slut #1 is or what happens to her money (I don't know how anyone ever thought she was attractive, to me she looks like a circus clown with all the makup and fake stringy blonde hair). I don't care that slut # 2 shaved her hair and is a bad mother. Yet both of these stories of these sleezy women, especially Anna Nichole Smith, have occupied news time more than the death of Ronald Reagan or Mother Teresa did when they passed on over the past 2 weeks.:barf:

Wow, this is starting to sound like a fine argument for BBC America. Funded by the state, but not beholden to the state. Journalists doing journalism, not sensationalism attempted to attract eyeballs.

The officer's name was given on national TV news, he and his wife were on the Today Show, many newspapers nationwide have reported to story and given the officer's name, a Google search on his name shows stories on Fox, CNN, AOL, MSNBC, USAToday, Yahoo News, WTOP in D.C., The Fresno Bee (CA), Sacramento Bee, U.S. Politics Today, Associated Press, ABC, Miami Herald, Canadian Broadcasting Co, The Tulsa World, etc., etc.

I'd say the media did a good job on picking up this story.

5 cops ( 1 of whom was off-duty) responded in 5 minutes. At least from what I read. That's a darn fine (if not unusual) speedy response. I wonder if UT police have any special organization that allows them to mobilize such a large response so quickly for an active shooter? I would be interested if they did... my city could use that model. Count on a 15 minute response time here... with maybe 2 officers.

Hell, give him a medal. If it were a CCW holder is irrelevant since it wasn't. Who knows. Probably in UT they would give him kudos... Kali... they would probably arrest him.

From what I read he did a good job. Reward him for it. I doubt he's patting himself over the back for killing someone but he probably saved a few lives. Good job I say.

The TV media has spent much more time on the Anna (RIP) and Britney (who cares?) story not to mention the vote to have a vote on a non-binding resolution on the war in Iraq. The coverage on the cop (who saved lives) must have been during the day as I've seen very little coverage on the morning and evening news about this. Again, I say this would be on 24/7 if it had been a school shooting. I just don't understand the main $tream media these days.

Not here. Not even close.

Yep. I was going to give my son our old 32 inch tv as a "gift" for his new apartment. Now I wonder if it would really be a curse!
