USP45C Carry: One or Two Spare Mags

If I end up getting CCW'd and get to carry my 45C (oooh, a right granted by the State as a priviledge, imagine that!) should I carry 2 mags, or is 1 'enough'? I know more is better, but I'm a skinny little bastard.

Ok Runt, how many do you carry? If you carry 2 spares, I know I can too :)

Actually, I only carry one spare, and most of the time it's in my purse if I can't fit it in the mag slot in my bellyband (gotta leave some space to expand for food, you know!). Since I carry my USPc in the 4-5 o'clock position, the mag slots end up in the 10 - 11 o'clock position (Ace Case bellyband), and the second spare mag will painfully butt up against the bottom of the ribcage.

But I do have a backup gun. And a knife. And another knife.

If you ever have to use more than the mag in your gun, you must be in some pretty deep doo-doo! :D

I don't carry any spare magazines. My Sig 239 holds 8+1. If I plan on getting into a firefight, I'll have the AR-15 and a basic load of 210 rounds. I carry the Sig for the one-in-a-million chance that I'll have to confront a Goblin on the street.

LEOs need spare magazines. As a (now) civilian, I don't feel the need. MHO! YMMV

I carry a 1911 with one spare mag.

I fully realize that if I have to use my pistol in self-defense, I will probably only get to fire a couple shots. I carry the extra mag in case of a malfunction of the first one, that is, if I get a chance to drop the defective mag and reload.

Carry two on my belt for my 1911. None for my bug.

I like a stable platform for my gear. I do not like fumbling in my pocket or purse. Murphy and all.

I do not recommend purse carry. Although if you have a tactical urban camo purse that match your tactical boots, then you could carry in there.

One spare mag is enough.

But you should also carry a spare complete slide unit in case your firing pin breaks.

On my HK 45 USP fullsize the firing pin has broken twice in 3000 rounds. Similar failures observed with USP 40s with some police departments.

Maybe the 45c has a better design.

I have the real estate that blade67 mentioned for two extra mags and that's what I carry. Why? 'Cause I don't want to get killed for lack of shooting back...

Skunk, I vote for one spare mag like most other posters but I'd add that I'd replace the weight savings with a Surefire 6Z tactical light in a Blade Tech combo pouch (1 mag, 1 light) or their equivalent and a good folding knife. I'm not familar with the USP compact in .45 but if you have a 10 rd pistol you'd only have 1 rd less than a 1911 or Sig 220 user with 2 spare mags not to mention the fact that I use my light at least once a week and my knife almost daily. In fact, if I choose to carry 4 spare mags or even no pistol at all, I always carry a light and a knife. As life saving tools, I'd venture to guess that chances are greater that I'll need the light to get myself out of an unfamilar building if the power goes out or the knife to cut a seatbelt after an auto accident than needing my pistol let alone the 2nd spare mag. That being said, if you can take the weight and have the real estate to spare, more ammo is never a bad idea.

Just like TFLer caliban sayz: "No one ever said after a gunfight, 'Wow I had way too many rounds!'" I think its a bad idea to carry just the one mag in the gun. Magazines and guns can have strange failures at random times. No gun is perfect and you must be prepared to correct failures.

Carry one spare mag, always. It's really for clearing malfunctions rather than extra ammo. Two is good also, but if you can comfortably carry two mags you can probably carry a backup pistol, which is better still.
