USP?

Anyone own a USP? I've wanted one for a long time. If I get one, it'd be in 9mm and have the "jet funnel" with 18 round magazines:

Should make a good little house or open carry gun. I read nothing but good reports on the reliability and the durability. Anyone have one or have shot one and if so, what are your thoughts on the Heckler & Koch USP (Universal Self-loading Pistol)?

I've owned a few of the Compact models, 9mm and 45ACP. To me it's a benchmark in terms of reliability and build quality. That said it is very '80s to me, in that it's somewhat bulky with very large controls. It's not nearly as ergonomic as some of the newer designs. That said I think it would serve you well.

If you do decide you'd like the trigger to be a bit better, you might try a Match Trigger kit. As a bit of shameless self promotion, I actually have one I've been trying to sell for a bit that I'd sell for say 50% of original cost, PM if interested :). I used it for about 200 rds before I had to sell the pistol and I took the kit out (I have a new sear spring to go with it as that part is hard to uninstall and reinstall without some wear).

I have several.

My HK USP Match in 9mm was my first handgun greater than a .22

I'll always like HK and have a sweet spot for the USP series that means I'll never sell them and while they are accurate and reliable I have many other handguns that are better for my purposes.

I have one in .40s&w as the .45's grip was just slightly bigger and didn't fit as well. Mine is in the V3 configuration. One of the better poly guns I've ever shot, and my favorite .40. Worth every penny I paid for it.

I have a bunch since they're pretty much my favorite polymer handguns. Legendary reliability, good looks, and superlative accuracy make for a pretty compelling package IMO. The steel jet funnel kit/mags are a great addition, as is a match (or match LEM hybrid) trigger.

A world class pistol. I have a couple. Never fail, never falter. Great guns. You'll like it.

TunnelRat:

Were the extra heavy DA USP Compact (.40 cal.) triggers found mostly on former LEO "trade-in" guns?

My neighbor with the DA which must exceed 23 # (more than Polish P-64) at the very end of the pull might have said that it was a German police example.

Fist handgun I ever shot was a USP.40(yep, I'm a youngster), as a beginner I didn't like it, snappy and a lot of muzzle flip. Fastforward to a few years ago, I handled one in the store, and boy did it just feel right in the hand, so much so I would have bought one immediately if I had a place in my collection for it.

Well, last year I found a reason to justify the purchase, and bought a lightly used USP Expert in .40, match trigger and adjustable sights, shoots... like... a... dream... At this point, I'm planning on a 9mm Expert sometime in the future as well.

None of the normal 10 USP variants include a 20+ lb trigger. The normal DA pull is about 11.5lb, pretty standard for any DA duty pistol. Normal HK SA trigger pull is about 4.5lb.

I rented one in the early 90's at a gun range chambered in .45 ACP. Totally reliable, good accuracy, and often the rental guns go dirty. H and K never appealed to me as they were more costly compared to other brands and my local gun shop tried to get a status as a H and K dealer and felt the company were snobs. Read that H and K did file for bankruptcy protection a few years later.

I bought a USP 40 when they first came out (has "traditional" rifling as opposed to the later and current "polygonal" type rifling) and it is still my only poly pistol. The USP is probably the most versatile semi-auto ever made; one of the few pistols that can be carried "cocked and locked" or in a traditional da/sa mode.
My pistol is well-made, accurate and reliable. If USP fits you and you can afford it, I recommend it.

Well, they are big as hell for a 9mm/.40. There is a bit of height over bore there. SA triggers are usually decent. DA triggers are what they are.

The big plus is it is a tank if you shoot a lot. It is reliable and just looking at it compared to a Hi-Power or 1911, you appreciate the engineering that went into the reduced maintenance.

There aren't a lot of guns where a viable solution to a bullet stuck in the barrel is "Pull the trigger and fire the next round." So the USP has that going for it.

I love my USP. Mines a fullsized in .40s&w. If it wasn't a USP I wouldn't own a .40s&w. I'm just not a fan of that caliber. When the USP came out it was originally released in the 40 first in 93 and shortly after in 9mm and in 95 the .45acp came out. Mine is a low S/N 93 gun. USPs are built like tanks and are super reliable and accurate.

HK in my opinion makes the best polymer framed handguns. Yes they are expensive but they are like driving a Mercedes to me haha. You can usually find them in the $600+ price range for a used one. I picked mine up for $500. The shop I work at has two USPs. Both in 40 and in good shape, one fullsized and one compact, both have night sights and 2 extra mags, the compact has the LEM lightened trigger and bobbed hammer and they are going for $749.99. I saw a couple of 9mm USPs about a year ago and they were going for I want to say $699.99. The triggers on them are not the best. Pretty heavy at around 11lbs but you can easily change them out with trigger kits from HKparts.net. All of my carry pistols are HKs. The USP, a P30sk and a HK45c Tactical. I like them so much and they are so reliable and accurate that I've sold all my Glocks, XDs, and M&Ps and run nothing but HKs. If you want a workhorse pistol that won't quit, get a USP or any HK and you'll be pretty happy.

Mine is a USP .45 Compact, I like it very much. Bought it back around 2001-2003 don't remember, many round no problems.

I had a stainless slide DAO in .40 years ago I carried on duty. I sold after about a year because I really disliked the trigger. I sold it to another officer who may still be carrying it. I don’t know what the D/S trigger is like.
