USP LEM trigger group - A beautiful thing

Courtesy of my friendly local RTO, who happens to be an instructor for HK, I got to shoot his .40 S&W USPC with the LEM trigger group this evening. I'm happy to say, this thing rocks.

For those that haven't heard of this, it's a special LEO-only (for now) modification and trigger group. It makes the USPC DAO, and instead of being a full DA stroke for each shot, it returns the firing pin to a "half cock" state for a short, smooth follow-up pull.

I really hope HK offers this as a standard trigger soon.. I was VERY impressed with how smooth it was. The trigger reset is very short as well, which made for some quick and accurate double taps. I normally find the .40 round to be a bit jumpy, especially in polymer guns, but this thing made me look GOOD :D

The initial guns sold for $480 at the wholesale level and that was including night sights. A smart dealer was replacing the standard capacity magazine with 10 round magazines and offering the gun to civilians for about 650 dollars. Unfortunately, there are very few dealers willing to take such a venture. As of January first, this will become unthinkable, because HK is going from over 115 LE dealers to six. And that will make converting LE guns to civilian guns cost prohibitive.

The USP40c LEM is supposedly going to be available to the retail market for 2002. I dont know how true this is. You can buy one from cals sporting armory @ http://www.calssportingarmory.com/

eventually, this is supposed to be offered as an after market trigger, like they have the match trigger for the fullsize USP's. H&K just doesnt know when yet. Probably due to the high demand for the LE market right now.

No, it's not the same as the Glock trigger system, though in practice it behaves somewhat similarly. It doesn't have the Glock's crunchy, creepy sproing.

I've had a chance to dry fire a friend's LEM (he's an INS officer). Seemed quite nice.

I called up HK customer service and asked if us lowly non-LEOs could get our guns modified to the LEM trigger. He confirmed what I've read in the press -- that HK plans to make it available sometime in the future as a modification done at the factory. But he did not know when that might be. He said at the moment that LEM parts are in short supply due to the INS contract. (According to my buddy, the INS has the largest number of armed officers of any federal agency.)
