H&K USP's are extremely durable. With proper maintenance, the gun could out-live you. It is a machine, and machines break, but the gun is thoroughtly rebuildable. As with any other autoloader, you will periodically need to replace springs, maybe the barrel after a 100K rounds (depending on what you put through it. If you're uncomfortable, have it inspected by a competent 'smith, preferabley one who's been to H&K armorer's school. $399 is an OK price for one that's in good condition. Good luck. M2
