USP.45c failure

After about 3-400 rounds through my new .45 compact, it's hanging up before closing the slide. It seems the extractor isn't catching the casing. I can rap the back and it'll go, but not on it's own. And the last shell in the clip hangs up in the chamber. I've cleaned it thoroughly, lubed it, etc... I shoot American Eagle, PMC, and Federals, all brass.

Has anyone had this problem and suggest a remedy other than the dreaded HK customer service?

I have one and I've never had this exact problem. I assume you're shooting ball ammo (230g FMJ)? Are you saying that the extractor doesn't enagage over the rim of the cartridge? If so, it sounds as if maybe the extractor spring is too stiff or that the extractor is dead sharp and it won't slip over the shell rim. I'm not going to suggest any course of action, but this might serve as a guide. The problem might take care of itself after more shooting as the spring or extractor wears a little more smooth. The last shell in the mag hangs up in the chamber or does it not feed all the way? I had a similar problem when the mag spring was brand new. Again, it may take care of itself as the spring loses tension somewhat. I also polished the feed ramp with some very fine polishing cloth to aid feeding, especially when feeding hollowpoints, SWCs, etc. This polishing may also help, but no need to overdo it. Let us know how it goes. Good luck. H&K customer service is a last resort unless you can afford to be without your pistol for weeks and weeks!

Thanks for the replies. Correct on the ball ammo, Gopher. And, yes, the extractor is failing to clasp the cartridge. It's worked wonderfully up to the time at the range---when my wife was shooting. Do you think... Nah! It seems peculiar that the extractor spring would tighten up now. As for the last shell jamming, it hangs up 1/2 way into the chamber. Again, it just started doing it. I tried each of the 3 mags I have: Same thing. As for the polishing, I saw some polishing compound that you roll your cartridges in and it adheres to the bullets. As they're ran through, it's supposed to hone for you. Ever tried this? Or is this better left to a qualified repairer?
Thanks for the other form info too!

Let's see. You've been spending a lot of time at the range with your shiny, new pistol and then your wife gets her hands on it for the first time...your wife's not the jealous type is she? :D Kidding! So, it closes all the way except for the fact that the extractor will not go over the rim of the cartridge as if you had dropped a shell into the chamber then slowly eased the slide forward on it? I'm kind of stumped if it does it with all your mags. I thought it might actually be a WEAK mag spring now that I think about it, but the problem with all the mags suggests that it isn't. There is a little plastic/rubber buffer inside the extractor spring that maybe was damaged. If you punch out the retaining pin you can see. Does it do it with every shot? If so your recoil assembly may be out of whack. I wish I could be more help. Sorry. :(

The polishing I did was only on the feed ramp. I used a little 2000 grit sanding film lightly, then followed up with 6-8000 grit polishing cloth. I don't know it it'll help your problem, though.
