After the Cingress authorized the creation of the Marine Corps its three new officers went to Tunns Tavern to recruit. At 10AM they recruitedthe furst United States Marine. They rushed him to a tailor's shop and had him fitted with a uniform, returned to the tavern, issued him a musket and had him march up and down in front of the Tabern to attarct public attentiom,
An hour later they recruited the second US Marine. As soon as he was uniformed and equipped he joined the first Marine outside the tavern.
After marching back and forth for two hours, the second Marine said.
"The sun is too hot abd this God damned musket is too dammned heavy. When do we get relieved?"
The first Marine looked at him and said with withering contempt
"Shut up you God damned boot! If you think this is rough, you should have been in the old corps!"

Went to my nephew's USMC graduation two years ago in MCRD San Diego. Interesting feeling. No quonset huts to speak of, but at least this time I got to walk around the base and eye-**** the area. They even have a museum I never got to see.
A good time was had by all.

I wanted to be a marine, but I couldn't pass the test... Just couldn't get my head in that jar ;)

8 years, USN (81-89). Had the opportunity to work closely with airwing marines, and security detachment, spec ops for anti terrorist unit. Thoroughly enjoyed the camaraderie.

I'm not but my Dad was and some of it naturally rubs off! He entered the Corp in Aug. 1941, before the festivities started. 3rd and 6th Mar. Divs. Out in '47. And as he still likes to say, "From cook to fighter pilot, no matter what, we were all riflemen." A big thanks and all the best to you Marines.

Chris..

I come from a Navy family. From my grandfather to my son, we all were Navy.
Each of us worked with the Marines during our wars. My Grandfather in Cuba (beach party), my Godfather/Uncle in WW II (SeaBees in the Pacific Islands-3 Purple Hearts), myself in Viet Nam (Brown Water Navy) and my son in Desert Storm (Corpsman with FMF).
We all have had our own battles with the Marines, (mostly in bars), but we would rather be with a few Marines than a lot of anyone else wtshtf.
Semper Fi, Marines!

I still live in The Camp LeJeune / Jacksonville area … any of you my neighbors? If so a gathering at the range may be in order.
