Using restroom with CHL

Okay, yes, this is a serious question. My CHL just came in the mail today, and I've been thinking about this practical aspect while I've been waiting for it to come in.

Okay, #1 I'm not worried, but what about if you've gotta go #2 and you're in a public restroom. I've got a Crossbreed supertuck that I generaly keep at either 4 oclock or 6 oclock. I'm just worried a passerby will notice it. Anyway, what do you guys do?

Use the stall, and I tend to put my pistol wedged on top of the cripple bar or the TP dispenser.

Some folks have lost their pistols, leaving them behind due to unholstering them. Seems to happen to police more often than CCW types, but it does happen.

I do a pat-down when I leave to make sure I've got everything though, including the gun.

This topic seems to come up once a month with new CCW types, so don't feel bad.

I will give you a serious answer.

The first suggestion is eat a steady diet and get yourself on a schedule to were you are usually at home.

Second, you don't have to pull your pants down to your ankles. Keep them just below your knees.

If I am holster carrying I put the gun in my pants----no pun intended. If fanny packing-----again no pun intended I hang it on the back of commode.

Never, never place the pistol OFF your person, whether on the TP rack or on the back of the toilet or whatever. As careful as you may be you run the risk of a mistake, and leaving it there. If it never leaves your person it never happens. Just take the pistol and kind of nestle it in the folds of your garments between your kness. It will never hit the floor, it is instanly accessable (and yes folks do get robbed in toilet stalls, happens quite a bit). You will also never get up and leave without the gun. Just keep the finger off of the trigger for Pete's sake or you will end up doing all the necesaries while sitting.

this is were a good shoulder holster comes in. no need to worry about leaving your weapon anywhere or having it go splash when you drop pants.

also with a shoulder holster you really wont have as much "oops, gotta dig through trousers and shorts" to get your gun out.

What jhenry said. Remove firearm and place inside your pants or shorts between your legs. Also try not to use a public bathroom, they can be pretty nasty sometimes.

If somebody attacks you in the stall use the chimpanzee defense. They'll wish you'd have used your gun instead.

I put mine on the TP dispenser, drop trousers, take seat and put it in the crotch of my trousers with them pulled up as high as possible.

When I am at work it is MUCH harder to forget----have to put vest and duty belt back on-----Although, I try to do it at station and put it in my locker.

Most of the time I pocket carry, so it's really not a problem. The gun stays put and as long as the pants aren't somehow positioned in a way to leave the pocket gaping open, it stays invisible.

If I carry a gun too big for the pocket, it means it's winter, if it's winter, I'm wearing a coat. So what I've done in the past, is removed the pistol from its holster, put it in the a large, secure coat pocket, and hung the coat on the coat hook of the stall, after I'm done, I put the coat back on, but the gun back into its place, and so on. Of course, it's only come up once before for me that I wasn't pocket carrying and needed to use a public restroom but didn't discover any problems with that method. Of course, the drawback as, you may not always have a jacket, and if you're the forgetful kind, there exists the risk of leaving your coat (and your gun in it) in the stall.

If you do the IWB thing, you could make sure to cover the gun over with your pants entirely as you're actually lowering your pants.

I carry a j-frame. I simply take it out of the holster and just slip it into my pants pocket before "conducting business". If a passerby just happens to see the clip of the empty holster, it can easily pass for being the clip of a cellphone.

Use the handicap stall or the family separate stall.

The first has enough room to drop your drawers without being seen unless Senator Craig takes a peek.

Or get a little bag - buy something. While standing put the gun in the bag. Then put the bag down. Then rearm. If the store says no bags in the restroom, well they probably won't get to you before you are done.

I have a problem understanding the problem.

The one in my pocket stays in my pocket, I don’t take off my pants and hang these by the cuffs.

The one in my holster is hanging on my belt. When holster carrying I wear a jacket and take off the jacket, but, again, I don’t take off my pants.

So that solves my situation for #2.

For #1 I just stand there.

For #3 I just make certain no one is close by.

if im dropping wolf bait, ill take my gun out before i sit down and just slip it into my pants that are bunched at my feet. Its out of sight, could still get to it easy if need be (lets hope that never starts being a problem), and also no way to forget it in the stall when its time to repant.

It should be noted that in busy places (airports come to mind as an example), it is not an uncommon crime for someone to surveil the restroom for someone to enter with a bag or coat then follow them in. Once the mark is sitting down with their mind on other matters it is easy to grab the coat off of the hook inside the door, or to snag the handbag, breifcase, or whatever from under the stall, and walk rapidly out. It is not a good idea to have a firearm in a position to be snagged. The coat maybe, the firearm, never. Choose the stall next to a wall and hold the briefcase against the wall with the foot.

Eww you guys use public toilets?

If I have an emergency I unholster and hold it in my hand. No forgetting and if someone sees an empty holster under the stall...I bet they take care of their business quickly and leave.;)

How to do the paperwork while holding a pistol is a topic for another thread. Don't try this at home kiddies...only in public.:D (I'm an expert)
