Using Alcohol to Neutralize Ammonia from Cu Borecleaners

Hi Gents..I heard that it is best to run a patch saturated with alcohol after using strong ammonia based borecleaner so to neutralize the ammonia.
I heard that you have to neutralize the ammonia or the ammonia will etch the barrel even after running a patch of perservative down the bore.
Is this true ?


After cleaning with "Sweets Borecleaner", I then run a patch saturated with alcohol..then dry barrel by running down two dry patches and then run a patch down the barrel saturated with Break-Free "CLP".

There is nothing wrong in cleaning this way?

Do not like the strong ammonia based cleaners..but they are the only cleaners that I have used..to successfully remove copper.

Alcohol is not going to "neutralize" anything, strictly speaking. Actually, if you use common rubbing alcohol, what will happen is that the 30% water in the bottle will dissolve and rinse out the ammona content of the Sweets very rapidly. Then you should dry and oil.
 
Yep. Hot water will get rid of the ammonia just as well.

Some rubbing alcohols have a bit of oil in them. I think you be better with hot water than with one of those.
 
Agreed .... very warm to hot water ........ get rid of the ammonia by ''infinite dilution'' ..... and then dry patch to point where no moisture remains, before an oil application.

As the NH radical is a base ... some might say you could neutralize with a mild acid .. but then you'd still have to purge that.

After using a steel-attacking formula (currently RB-17) I then clean 'conventionally', normally using Hoppes #9 (or sometimes BreakFree CLP or Prolix).

But I get it ALL out.........
