Uses for empty 8 pound powder jugs?

What do you guys do with your empty 8 pound powder jugs? I mean the jugs that contain 8 pounds of powder, not the jugs that weigh 8 pounds...for you English teachers.

Do you guys toss them out?

Is there a use for them, other than as targets?

I have a bunch, and I’m probably gonna toss them. I just cleaned and reorganized my reloading room, and it feels good!

I like to cut plastic jugs off and use them around the shop for things like soaking something in oil or solvent and things like that. You can throw them away afterward with no loss involved.
They also seem to sometimes take the place of bins for storing and working with brass around the loading bench once they are cut down to a 2" or 3" depth. Just takes a minute with a razor knife to transform one into a usable tool for you.

Just emptied one today and am hesitating throwing it away because it's the most expensive plastic jug I've ever bought. :D

I too wanted to find a good use for them but sadly I can't they don't stack very well. I have filled them with water froze them then shoot them to watch the ice and slush come out:D

Too bad they can't be returned to the manufacturer and reused to keep the price of powder down. But our society is too far into the throw-away mode.

I recycle mine but do keep it in mind they can be cut up and used as noted above.

I keep one 8 lb jug for mixing powder from 1 lb jugs.

Unfortunately mfgs dictates this stuff, not us.

Batteries used to be the same way until the regs kicked in and forced mfgs to provide a recycle path for them (specific not generic)

Now something like 95% of all lead acid batteries get recycled right back into lead and then split out to the battery mfgs again. Nice system.

fewer bathroom stops on long distance road trips....just joking...sorta.

Seriously I just toss mine in the recycle bin

Interesting. Our local recycle won't accept Number 1 unless it is the crinkly water bottle type. Annoying as we get a lot of number 1 other plastic.

No lock out of #2 though.

They make nice receptacles for things like shotgun pellets; can be filled with water or sand and used for door stops or any other scenario where you might need weights; using them as waste containers for oil, anti-freeze or similar. Can also be reused again for gun powder if you bought several 1# (of the same powder obviously), you can dump them all in the bucket and blend them.......LOTS of uses.

CDOC- it would cost far more to man someone to handle you bringing in the jug, going to a bin, filling it, taking your money and running pick-up window than it would for them to simply make a new jug. Your overall cost would be higher.

I think you're just showing off machineguntony :p. But then, if I ran full-auto, I probably would too ;)

Actually, I haven't given it any thought, since I've always purchased one # at a time (or multiple 1# containers) - until recently. And of what I have purchased (only one 4# of Power Pistol; one 8# of W231; and one 8# of AA2230), I have yet to open.

With the 1-pounders, I have kept one of each type I've used. Therefore I can fill from larger containers and use the small containers on the bench - with the lot number from where it came on a sticker affixed to it. I'm not going to take an 8# container to the bench every time.

Back to the big containers: Knowing me, I'll hold on to them for a while, then toss 'em when I get tired of looking at them. In any case, it's gonna be a while. It could be some time before I even open my biggies; since I have multiple small containers to use up first.

I have a small handful of the 8lb'ers also. I use them for recyclable metal. I've got one with brass that's no longer good for loading, one has rimfire brass in it and one is filled with spent primers.

I have never visited a metal recycler but I plan to leave with some cash on the day I finally do.

I dont know what part of the country macineguntony is from but...Id fill it.them up w/ DRY masoniry sand and put one in each of my vehicles in case I need to get out of a icy ditch one day. The screw caps will never pop off and spill the contents in the trunk..
