One of my favorite dealers has one of the first 617s made in Oct of 1989.
Wood grips. 6" barrel. 6 shot.
Its got an aluminum cylinder.
I talked to three different techs at SW who stated the change was cosmetic and at customers' request. They didn't like the two tone of the aluminum on SS frame. No mechanical or excessive wear and teare issues. It was just lighter and cheaper to make with a special aluminium alloy almost like forged metal. Its .22lr after all. Not 44 mag.
May have had a trigger job.
