used smith 64-5 3 inch

I am looking at a Smith 64-5 3 inch barrel for sale, $530. I thought that the price was high, but I haven't looked at any used guns for a few years. Has some holster wear, but otherwise tight. Too high?
 
The 3" K-frame .38s aren't so numerous and typically command a bit of a premium. I wouldn't say that price is unreasonable if the gun is in top shape but it could be better.
 
3 inch barrel. Not real common. I don't believe a lot of rounds have gone though it based on what I have seen. He wanted 570, now 530. Barrel is not pinned. I would not rate the gun as primo , has some significant holster wear.
 
How are you measuring the barrel?
I don't see how a stainless revolver can have significant holster wear. Holster wear is a term primarily used to describe wear of bluing on high spots of non-stainless guns?
 
From the tip to the end of the forcing cone. When I say holster wear, I should have been more specific: The gun appears to have been carried and used as evidence by some scratches and rubs etc, not "holster wear" which would be used to describe a blued handgun.
 
3" round butt K frames are hot right now, and for good reason. But, $530.00 for one in the condition described by the O/P is somewhat overpriced. This price is getting into the starting price of 3" model 65's and 2 1/2" model 19/66's.

O/P, if you decide to buy it, remember you did not overpay, you just bought ahead of the curve.
 
Last 3 inch K I got was a TPD (Tampa or Topeka police department) model 64-3 in .38 spl. Factory flash chromed DAO hammer and trigger.

I don't think I paid $300 for it. Tight and shoots right on with 158 gr SWCs.

And just a bit earlier a S&W 65-5 or so. Case hardened hammer and trigger. No lock but it had the new style firing pin on the frame. .357. I think it was only $399 and it to was in excellent cond.

I'm just a fool for K frames, mostly 2 - 3 inchers.

I like three inch revolvers, especially K-frames, though I only have a couple. If just some handling marks and minor scratches, I would probably pay that much. That's at my upper limit. Of course, prices vary by location.

You can probably either polish the gun or bead blast it to get out most of the handling marks.
 
I think it could be a pretty fair deal. These don't show up alot in my area, but the last Model 64 I saw was a 4" and it was in decent shape and listed for $525.
 
Op, don't know how important a model 64 in 3 inch is to you but if you look online, you can find model 64 "police trade-ins" in 4 inch for around $300-$350 & model 10s for around $250-$350. Even after you factor in tax + shipping + transfer fee, it should still be less then the $530 he's asking.
 
A 3" K-frame .38 or ideally .357 is the "Glock 19" of the wheelgun world, especially with a round butt and compact grips of some kind (S&W magna stocks and a Tyler-T grip adapter being superb for the job, make it a DAO with bobbed hammer for a home run).

Concealable but with an extra round, better ballistics, easier to reload, and in my experience a lot easier to shoot than any J-frame. OP the price isn't exactly stellar but I would try and talk him down to $500 or below. If not, I'd still snag it as long as it has a good tight action and put it to work as a carry gun. :)

That's buying a gun sight unseen which always carries a risk. Plus, yes, the 3 inch is much more desirable.

One has to shoot them to see the difference.

Overpriced to one person can be dirt cheap to another - just ask folks in restricted states what "high-capacity magazines go for.

As 60 2-1/2 19s, I paid $349 for one at Gander about 6 months ago.........they also had a K38 Masterpiece for $600, but I couldn't do both.....:(
 
3 inch smith?

ok... A 3" round butt 64?... first find out if the gun is DAO. There are a few former police gun's in this configuration. This was the last incarnation of the NYPD authorized service revolver.

If your buying it as an investment... that might be a bit too pricey for that application and in that condition. If your looking for about the 2nd best .38 spl fighting gun available... jump on it.
 
I've ben casually looking for an affordable 3", RB K-frame (Mag or Spl) for a couple years. Can't remember seeing one listed for or selling for under $500, which is why I don't own one. Can't understand where all these low priced guns I read about on the internet are found. Guess I don't live right, or in the right place at least!

And to the poster earlier who suggested picking up a 4" SB police trade in...if the object is to acquire a 3", RB those cheap police trade in's just won't cut it.
