Used revolver advice needed

I am looking for a good used 357 or .38P+ mid to small sized S&W, Taurus, Ruger, etc. revolver for personal protection. I currenly own three auto's but no revolvers. What should I look for when sizing up a used revolver's mechanical fitness? I want a quality gun and don't mind paying extra for it, but I don't want to buy someone else's problem. Help!
