Used pump for trap or new barrel for current shotgun?

For years I have shot pistol and rifle while shotguns have been relegated to deer hunting or HD. Things have started to change for me. For the past few saturday am's I have shot a round or two of trap at my local club. At first I borrowed a members O/U (ruger red label) and then my father-in-laws 870 TB.

I am thinking that I could pick up a 28" barrel with accu-set chokes from mossberg for my maverick 88 for ~$150. Another option is to pick up another older shotgun with a 30" barrel and a full choke. I have seen used mossberg 500's, Sears/winchester 1200's, high standard flite-kings and stevens 520's all for ~ $150-200. Any thoughts?

Interchangeable chokes will give you more options. I frequently use a modified choke while trap shooting (when I'm not shooting handicap).

I'm guessing your father-in-law's 870 TB has a Monte Carlo stock. After shooting his Wingmaster, I doubt you'll be happy with a used entry level gun for trap.

I'm a big fan of the Mossy 500 but they have their limitations. For me they didn't point well enough for serious trap shooting. If you're just shooting casually now and then, then the barrel might be a good move. But if you plan to get into it I'd test shoulder a lot of shotguns.

Use the mossberg,,,

with new barrel. as far as pointing, Mossberg sells a stock shim set for adjusting the stock up/down to fit you.
Also google Wenigs gunstock, for total replacement with monte carlo.

get proficient with what you got then spend money for better equipment.

Between the red label and the wingmaster, I may be a bit spoiled thus far:D I think my best bet may be to keep borrowing my father-in laws gun and also keep my eyes open for a used wingmaster of my own.

Shoot what fits you best and just change chocks or get the barrel you need. I have a friend back in florida that as a hobby ran a quail lease and got pulled in to try'n the local sporting clays range. He said most all shooters used both over and unders and high end autos. He shot an old winchester model 10 i think with a cutts compensator and won the next 2 years . SO, shoot what fits you and works well for you.
