Used M1A values

I'm going to take a look at a used M1A in a few days for a friend. The asking price is $750, but I'm not sure of the rifle's manufacture.

I figure this is dirt cheap for a Springfield Armory M1A that's in decent shape. True?

I'm aware of the Chinese M1As, but what to look for if it is? What's a typical price range for these?

Who else made M1A's and what to look for in that maker's wares?

Thanks again.

If it's an M1A, it's a Springfield...otherwise, it's an M14 clone. Should say so on the reciever. Armscorp makes a pretty good one, from what I've been told. Chinese knock offs are of dubious design quality at best, but with a little work, (i.e. ~10 months at a gunsmith's shop) they can be passable service rifles.

I think that the most telling signs can be found on the reciever. Any indications of rewelds, (visible weld lines accros the reciever, bolt rails that aren't straight), should be the no-go sign.

Scott Duff has an exceptional book on the M14. It's available at
http://www.fulton-armory.com
where they also do top grade work on M1A's and M1s. The website has alot of info, too!

If it's an SA M1A, and it's in decent shape, (how many rounds through the bore??), it's definitley a steal, since these usually go for $1000+ used.

Good luck...let us know what happens!

Parts Kits?

Anyone know if there is a source for M14 parts kits at less than Armscorp's now-extortionate pricing? To go from $299 to $629 or whatever in maybe 12 years is surely a product of asinine legislation and price-gouging supply-demand fiction.

As far as used prices go, I've seen standards listed for auction at just under $1200, and match-tuned used ones listed for $1850 and up.

But there were no bids.
