I would like help with identifying a U.S Springfield armory rifle. the rifle is a bolt action with a 24 inch barrel. On the right side below the bolt is a metal door (spring loaded) where rounds are inserted. When the door is closed the rounds are forced up awaiting to be cycled by the bolt. The previous owner taped the receiver for a scope mount and drilled over the model # for the mount. I would appreciate any info such as model and caliber or reference material. The serial # is either in the 200,000 s or 2,000,000. ALSO IF YOU KNOW THIS MODEL, A BALL PARK VALUE HIGH AND LOW.

Another possibility might be a Krag-Jorgenson? Just my guess.

steve thanks it is a krag jorgensen I believe it is the model 1898 rifle. would you give a guess on the high and low value. The stock is custom and the gun is in good condition. thanks

A US Model 1898 Krag rifle would run from about $350 in 60% condition to about $2000. in 100%.

Note that the custom stock and any other changes usually REDUCE the value greatly.

The old WWI vet who was the president of my old gun club had a Krag in about 95% condition he'd bought through the NRA-DCM program for $3.50 MANY years ago.
