My father in law just told me about a guy selling this for $300 and was wondering if I was interested. My question is, I don't know anything about them but I thought this seemed to be a cheap price if it is in good condition and original.I'd like to take a look at it today but would like to know what I should look for and look out for.I certainly don't want to buy a piece of crap.Any suggestions will be helpful.

I'm no expert on the M-1 Carbine, but so long as it's straight from the gubmint and has no aftermarket products on it, I'd buy it.

Any real GI M1 Carbine in very good condition would be a steal at $300 today! The prices range from $400-500 to several thousand, dependent on the specifics of the gun in question. I know I'd buy all the real GI Carbines in excellent condition that I could find at $300. :)

USGI vs. Commercial reproduction

Be sure it is USGI and not a commercial repro at that price. The repros are Universal, Iver Johnson, or Plainfield. There is a company today called IAI using GI parts on new receivers. The repros are not necessarily bad (I own a Universal) but a lower price is on order. The USGI carbines came from several manufacturers, so it is easier to post a list of the repros than originals.

If there is not significant pitting from rust, then $300 is good.

A Good Deal

$300 is a Good price for one of the commercial repros, for a USGI
carbine in shooting condition, it's a low price by a couple of hundred $. The lowest price I've seen lately for a USGI Winchester made WWII model was $500.
The collectors value depends on: who made it, it's condition, the originality of the component parts. THere are M1 Carbine collectors sites out there in webland that are an archive of info onthese little weapons.:)

I called the gentleman this A.M. It was indeed a genuine USGI but it was sold 2 hours after the the ad in local paper had been released.:(
