Urgent, Colt Python 357, good deal?

My local gun shop has a new Colt Python 357 hunter set that just went on sale for $1,299. It has never been fired, includes the Leupold colt edition scope, all unused cleaning supplies and the aluminum "attaché style" case. The barrel length is 7 1/4 or 7 3/4 inches, I fear I don't recall which.

This gun has a lot of nostalgia for my dad and I want to buy it for him, but first wanted to make sure this is a good deal, and also want to ensure that it has a likelihood of future collectable value. I know there are a lot of Pythons out there. The finish is glossy black, and it sure looks sharp and feels good in the hand…

Thanks for any and all opinions!

there's just "something" about a Python...

$1299 sounds like a decent price, given that it is new and unfired with a Leupold scope and case. I am basing my opinion on the fact that I have seen minty used (old style) Pythons at gun shows priced at $850, used ones in not so minty condition at $750, and given the prices of the new Python "Elite" (close to $1000).

I don't know about the collector's value of the Python Hunter edition and the rest of the goodies that come with it, but going strictly on the price, the fact that it is unfired and like new and the accessories, $1299 seems within reason.

See if you can get it for less (maybe $1200) of course! If I wanted it, I would pay $1299, and would definitely pay $1200; that's just my opinion though.

Good luck! :D

It doesnt matter what the price is you'll never find another I would buy it. That gun works well with heavy loads also making it a fine deer gun. And yes its a wonderful price.

Please keep the feedback coming, and to timothy and progunner, thank you very much for your feedback! Good shooting to all!

If you REALLY feel the need to have a python and have the funds, go for it, cuz you probably aint gonna find another one like that in your lifetime!

Given what has been said already about how hard it is to find something like that, and Father's day is around the corner-----Get off the computer and buy that gun!!! :D
(I'm jealous, I'll probably just get a tee shirt  )

Fjestad 22nd Edition Blue Book lists that particular Python package in 100% condition at $1395. Add 10% for nib.
Considering my Blue Book is a few years old, and the fact that particular Python package was only offered through Colt's Custom Shop for one year, (1981), the asking price of $1299 seems to be quite fair.
Take Care

Barrel length is 8 inches. Price is fair since it's NIB and has all the goodies (including scope) with it. I don't think it will ever have much of a collector's value even though it had a limited production (one year only in 1981 I think). It's more of a niche gun than a collector like the Silouhette Python which followed it a few years later. The long barreled Pythons have never had the popularity of the shorter barrels.

Thank you for all of the comments, I did pick it up today, although I failed to dicker down the price. :) I am very pleased with it, the previous owner even had a magazine ad from a 1981 Outdoors magazine that Colt ran announcing the new model. It was tucked under the foam in the lid of the case.

By the way, thanks a lot majic, now I am going to be looking for Silouhette Python! :D

_May your aim be true!-
