Upstate NY firing ranges & reputable gun shops

I reside in Port Henry NY and am looking to purchase my first handgun, the problem I'm running into is finding a shooting range that rents firearms as well as a reputable dealer. I tried randomly picking locations online but after an hour drive the only Rod & Gun Club around here doesn't rent firearms and the first gun shop I picked was the size of a closet with an owner who couldn't care less that I walked in the door.
I'm looking for any advice on decent shops within the area and, possibly more importantly, to find out if anyone knows where one may rent and test various firearms in the area.

usually not too many rental places in ny, as the permit/law process
basically says you can only touch the guns that listed on your own permit

there very well may be some out there somewhere in ny, but i would guess
not that many

what would be good would be to find a local rod and gun club or range that
has a meeting listed and go...meet some of the members and say you are
interested

they will be more than willing to help you out in your quest to find a
good hand gun to buy

most stores wont let you even touch a gun that they are selling if you
dont have a permit

new york is tough that way and you will get used to it as you go along
(maybe not used to it, but at least tolerate it)

go to the fourth box down at this url and put in your zip code and
it will kick out a bunch of local ffls...maybe not all of them but some
it will help you find a seller....they will know of the local clubs and ranges too

good luck...there are many out there who are willing to help some one
learn the ropes

I would suggest you find a range in VT that rents pistols, try the weapons you are interested in. There are no restrictions in VT.

Then go back to NY and get your paperwork submitted so you can legally possess your pistol you want when you can purchase it.

Yourang?, that website is the best advice I've gotten yet. This community has been a great resource thus far and I hope to be a long time member. Unfortunately none of my NY based family owns, or even likes, firearms so I'm pretty much going into the application for, learning of and purchasing of a gun by myself. Oddly enough there seems to be a gun shop right down the road from me, about a five minute drive, that I had no idea existed and your sight pointed out so I'll be checking that out this week.

Hermanr, we're just across the river from VT so my girlfriend and I have been meaning to check it out. I shouldn't have too much trouble convincing her to tack on a shop/range or two to the visit when we make the trip over. ;)
