UPS shipping for repairs

In sending a full firearm (the AP9 I posted about in another thread), must it be shipped from an FFL and then back to a local FFL? In talking with AA Arms, they send it didn't have to. They may have a point. Who knows what is in that package? Then again, the shipping address to an "Arms" Company gives it away.

IF you are sending in firearm for repair/refinish/etc. YOU can send this in directly to the company doing the work. They should ship it directly back to you. At least that's the way it is done here in Colorado. Check local ordances. DON'T USE THE ORIGINAL BOX THE FIREARM CAME IN!! DON'T USE UPS!!! (They require that you place a firearms sticker on the box - which screams "STEAL ME") Use Yellow Freight or Fedex or one of the 'other' shipping comapnies ... Hope that helps. And hey, AA Arms orders supplies (office, warehouse, etc) that arrive by shipping companies all the time that aren't firearms.

Wallew is right. If sending for repairs, custom work, ect, you can send it directly to an FFL and they can return it directly to you. Even worked that way when I lived in the freedomless city of NY.

Solitar, you can send it directly to an FFL (either a licensed gunsmith or manufacturer). No need to get another FFL involved. Personally, I don't use UPS, both because of their anti-gun nonsense and because of the problem they're having with thefts of firearms. Spend a bit more money and send it FedEx.

What I do is put the gun in its original plastic box, then at FedEx, I put it into one of their boxes.

Any common carrier that puts a firearm label on a package is violating Federal law:

"No common or contract carrier shall require or cause any label, tag, or other written notice to be placed on the outside of any package, luggage, or other container that such package, luggage, or other container contains a firearm." 18 U.S.C. 922(e)

Cawdor is right. I have shipped frearms twice and neither UPS or Fed Ex put labels pertaining to firearms on them. You must tell them its a firearm and without ammo .(no one has asked if it was unloaded!) Use the initials of the company insead of the full name and since it must go overnite now on either FedEx or UPS I choose FedEx and find the price the same. I also track it there to make sure it arrived.
Good Luck!

How about a related shipping question... I've talked with a holster maker about one for my gun, and they don't have a "pattern" for it. They'd need my gun for a few weeks. Can I ship direct, even though they aren't modifying/repairing the gun itself?

Thanks.

I just got back from UPS. I'm sending a rifle in for trigger work. They want to know it is a firearm, but ask that you DO NOT put anything on the packaging saying it is a firearm. Even the name of the company should be put in initials. Long arms can be shipped regular ground. Handguns must go overnight or overnight air saver. However, when I shipped my Hi-power, I shipped it minus the barrel. The manager on duty, said as long as the gun cannot be fired, it can go ground. So now I ship my handguns in separate packages. On by UPS and one by regular mail.
