UPS Regs regarding shipping of rifles

I just purchased an AR15 from a seller in the same state-Texas. He took it packaged to UPS today to ship it to my FFL. He was going to ship it Overnight but was told by the UPS counter person that only handguns could be shipped overnight-rifles had to be shipped by Ground. Is there any truth to this or do we have another misinformed UPS employee? So UPS requires handguns be shipped overnight-to avoid theft. Seems like rifles/shotguns would fit in the same category to me. In fact it would be easier to recognize a rifle/shotgun due to the long packaging-or so it seem to me.

Go to the UPS counter, not the franchise old Mail Boxes locations
My thoughts exactly- The_Vigilante, was the seller at an actual UPS hub or a strip-center mailbox rental place? I've never had any problem at all with the employees at my local UPS hub, and I've shipped various types of firearms there.

The strip-center "UPS Store" locations are franchises and aren't supposed to handle firearms, but given the variations in ownership and employee quality at these places, there's no guarantee that everyone manning the counter really knows what the rules are.

this is why i ship FROM FFL's.

id rather pay $25 and let him deal with it than pay $15 and have to deal with UPS or USPS idiocy.

Join the dark side...ship from ffls.

The downside of having your FFL mail a gun for you is that, if it's a two-way trip to the maker for repairs or an FFL holder/gunsmith for modifications, it'll have to go back to the FFL when it returns.
Which means you'll have to go pick it up again. Which may or may not be convenient.
For me, that's a 50-mile round trip. Which definitely ain't convenient. :)

I prefer to have it delivered right back to my doorstep, if it's only an out-of-town visit. :)

Thats a good point. My guy is up the river and through the woods so to speak.

About a five minute drive. Easily walking distance (not that i would)

When i had to ship an NAA mini for repairs, i got 15 different answers from UPS.

Between shipping, gas to the UPS place, and shipping materials (which the FFL all covered out of his fee) $25 seemed fair.

The most educated instructions i got out of UPS, From a outsourced Indian lady, told me i had to drive about 50 miles to some "special" ups place. The gas alone in my big clunker would have been about $25.

So i guess my situation is the opposite of yours. The 50 mile drive would have been the UPS option.

In my case, the UPS hub (the "special place") is actually about a mile from my dealer, in another town entirely.
Outgoing would be a wash. Incoming is one more 50-mile round trip I'd rather not have to make. :)
With gas, time, traffic, etc., I'd just prefer to have the gun delivered to my home & pay the extra to ship UPS or Fedex.

Long guns are fine by any service level, handguns go next day air to help keep theft down.

My center just fired a driver for stealing pistols. He'd been doing it for about a year and they finally caught him red handed.

I would go Fed Ex before I went UPS word has it the reason they go over night is they cant trust their employee's and after what happened years ago with my rifle I could understand why.

Since you're both in Texas, you can take it to UPS or Fedex and just ship it. The law regarding notification to the carrier applies only to INTERSTATE shipments if I recall.
