upgrading ruger 10/22

I bought a stainless 10/22 with synthetic stock with the intention of gradually turning it into a classy looking tack driver. Right now it is the ugly runt of my collection and I don't have a strong desire to shoot it anymore in it's current condition. I have it set on my mind to improve it's overall look, then gradually increase it's performance there after.

What I have:
Factory everything, stainless steel, including weaver mount.
Crappy Wally-world Tasco 40mm 3-9x scope with rings.

What I would like to get in order of priority, over the next year or so with a budget of <=$800 ($1200 if I can be convinced I need a suppressor):
Stainless fluted threaded bull barrel , nicely finished thumb-hole stock, trigger group or comparable, decent scope, muzzle break, bipod, MAYBE a suppressor.

The deciding factors for me when selecting an item in order are: aesthetics (looks) -->budget-->performance. Not the best, I know.

I would like the first portion of my upgrade to involve the stock and barrel, which should satisfy my desire for an aesthetic upgrade with added performance. I really can't do one without the other.

This is what I have in my shopping cart:
18" stainless EABCO threaded fluted
Blue & Gray laminated thumbhole stock
This is pretty much what I want my 10/22 to end up looking like.

So far this comes out to $348 plus shipping.

I would like someone's opinion on what I am looking to do. Have I made any huge mistakes? Can I find a better deal of a barrel or stock? Am I wasting money on a threaded barrel? Is my budget realistic?

Any comments would be greatly appreciated.
 
Tactical solutions makes a fluted aluminum barrel that weighs half what the stainless barrel does. Check out boyds for some really pretty stocks. for 800 bucks you can go all out for a really nice rifle. A good smith should charge about $75 for a trigger job, some kind of extended mag release and an auto bolt release are are manditory, and can be installed with the trigger job. The volqartsen scope mount that extends past the reciever is the mount I would put on it, it is the only mount that lets you mount the scope far enough forward to get propper eye relief.
 
Great call on the boyds, I think I need one of the SS Evolutions stocks backordered or not.

I'm torn on the barrel though. I 'think' I want the option to put a muzzle break or suppressor. If I can be convinced that this option is a utter waste of money I'll go back to the drawing board on the barrel. I like the idea of the heavier barrel reducing the recoil but I want the weapon to have decent balance and be comfortable. I'm a big guy. Any length suggestions? I've been looking at 18"

It looks like everything is back-ordered. I guess I'm no hurry but I'll still take any advice.

I have the evolution stock on my rifle, I love mine. The supressor is a decision you have to make, I am not a fan of giving the atf a no-knock warrant to enter my house, and a trust is not my bag. As to a break, I haven't feltthe need for one, but, again, it is your call
 
You have a very good point about the suppressor. I kinda forgot able that small fact about the feds checking in at any time. I'm really stuck on the barrel situation: Light vs Heavy. I think I'm going to go threaded and I want the barrel to match the stainless receiver, so it's between silver aluminum finish and stainless steel. Anyone know where I can fine either of these for under $250?
 
how are you wanting to mostly shoot the gun??? offhand or bench

This question is to help with stock choices: take a look at the raptor gun stock. works well offhand and has nice for-end for on bags

Barrels: look at whistle pig, they are very accurate and can do some real cool colors, great people also. rim fire technologies makes some tensioned barrels that shoot like lazer beams

Honestly I'd like to do both and right now I can't put one above the other at this point. What I'm after is a very nice looking gun, which can shoot golf balls at 75yds (maybe 100?),and can keep the tree rats out of our one pecan tree. If my priorities are misaligned or my exceptions are completely off, I would like to know about it so that I can go back to the drawing board. Thanks for the links and comments.

Here is one of mine with raptor stock and green mountain s/s heavy flute barrel, bolt rework by CPC, trigger group and guts from rimfire tech. golf balls are a piece of cake

Currently building a purple one for wifey and it will run an 18" whistle pig barrel.

barrel weight is another personal preference. I like my aluminum barrel, combined with the light weight evolution stock, it is well balanced, easy to carry, sub moa accurate, and shoulders quickly and naturally for a snap shot. My wife's rifle is equiped with a hogue stock and a green mountain steel, spiral fluted barrel. It's a sub moa rifle that weighs a ton, but when shooting from position with a sling it is very steady.
 
This is going to be a tough decision will all that is available. I'm thinking about a KIDD tension barrel that splits the difference in weight, but is pretty pricey. The desire for a muzzle break to make it look cool is really jacking the price up. But I have plenty of time to make a decision with everything being back ordered.

I really hope I can replicate that kind of accuracy Eazmo.
 
If looking at a tensioned these come very highly recommended. I don't own one yet but my next build for me will have one(after wife and no.1 son)

Please keep in mind that after you have invested $1000.00 +/-, you will have a very nice accurate .22 rifle. When you get tired of it or want to move on, you might get half of what you invested back when you try to sell it. Kinda like a custom car or a restoration car that you spend $100,000. dollars to build and can sell it for $40,000. if you are lucky.
Not to say don't do it, just be aware.

That's why I like to ask so many questions about something as important as the barrel. I've already received a lot of great advice from people that know better than me. I'm pretty confident about choosing the KIDD, are there any companion items that would go hand in hand with this new barrel that anyone would suggest?
 
Maybe I missed it but I saw no mention of a new trigger. I put a Volquartsen trigger in mine and it makes a big difference. Very light and crisp.
 
It's there, right after barrel and stock. I'll pester you about it when I get to that phase :D

I'm going to go ahead and order the KIDD barrel. I believe I will be quite pleased with it.

yes, a properly squared and head-spaced bolt and premium guide rod and spring.
either buy a complete bolt or have yours reworked.

I can and will highly recommend randy at CPC if you decide to go that way.

I have had 5 bolts reworked by him and he does a fantastic job with fast turn around times

I cut my factory synthetic stock to fit the barrel until my SS Evo comes in. I ran my the last 150 rounds of remington el-cheapo and it did alright. Had to take the dremel to the terrible trigger group, its much better now but still needs replacing.

Would anyone like to suggest what to feed the 16.5" KIDD?
