Upgrading 870 Express?

Just put a synthetic pistol grip stock on it with a 20 inch barrel and a side saddle and you will have a pretty cool police-looking shotgun.

The trigger guard/trigger assembly are plastic.

Everything else is metal of some sort.

It's an extremely tough plastic, though; I'd be more worried about the MIM parts failing before I'd worry about the trigger assembly.

Guys, I know that I am overly hung up on nomenclature, but that said, lets for the sake of discussion use the correct terms. The part that holds the trigger, hammer and the other assemblies is called the TRIGGER PLATE. Regardless of the material of it's construction (polymer or aluminum) the assemblies within the trigger plate are bushed with steel cylinders called (pivot tubes) these are the bearing surfaces that the other steel parts ride in and on. In my mind trigger plates of both materials have held up very well in testing and extended use. You can change out the trigger plate to what ever flavor you prefer, however I do not see this as an upgrade, it doesn't make the gun operate any better.

Does yours have the hated J-lock safety? If yes, I'd ditch that.

Dimples in the mag tube? - those can be fixed if necessary but no new parts to buy.

If you're obsessive, you could change the extractor to a non-MIM part, but the odds that it will ever break on you are incredibly low.

I would not change the trigger plate (SGB is right ;) ) to metal. The plastic is actually a more robust part, even if less satisfying.

As I stated
I know that I am overly hung up on nomenclature

And yet in this one thread discussing Rem 870 trigger plates they were referred to as; The trigger guard - trigger assembly - trigger group - trigger - all discussing the part below.

It is not a real issue for me, just a clarification of what is actually being discussed.

The bottom line in my day if one would have asked the Remington police parts desk for a trigger assembly, one would receive: part # 20610 trigger and part # 17533 trigger pin neither necessary for replacement of a trigger plate part # 102204 enough said, OK
