I think it would be possible to build a better Mini-14 (some would say it would be hard to build a worse one ;P). My thoughts:
-The M-14/Garand action is a good one, keep it/improve it?
-A heavier, better made barrel (chrome lined/fluted?)
-Computer aided design to make it lighter and stronger.
-Synthetic stock, modern anti-rust coating for the steel.
-Accepts AR-15/M-16 magazines.
-M-14 sights/flash suppressor, ahem, I mean "muzzle brake".
The goal would be to make a strong, lightweight, low maintenance, reliable modern light rifle in .223, nearly as accurate as the AR-15, for about half the price. I think it would be a big hit with a lot of people.
