UPDATE: Workplace death threats against me.

First, I want to thank all of you for your words of encouragement and advice. It was truly heartening to read so many supportive replies to my post.

Second, the outcome, so far, of the saga. On Wednesday at 1 p.m., BGB was called to HR and his employment with the company was terminated. As a precautionary measure, a police officer was stationed in HR just in case there was any trouble. Nothing happened and the termination procedure went smoothly. As a further precaution, for the next few nights (I work nights), the company has hired an off-duty police officer to be on company property. HR talked with my people last night to tell them that if BGB is seen on company property again, he is considered to be trespassing and (our unarmed) security should be called immediately.

I hope this is the end of this story, but only time will tell. Let's hope he gets another job quickly and chalks this whole episode up to experience.

Thanks for checking in, DAL. :) I'm glad to hear that the termination went smoothly, but you are smart not to let your guard down. Hopefully this guy will get his act together so others won't have to go thru what you did.

Pay attention on holidays and on the anniversary of the event. I've read that these times can make someone brood and show up.

Haven't seen if that effect is for more than a year's worth though.

DAL, glad to hear all as well so far, but as Ottergal said, don't let your guard down.

I can offer one new piece of advice. If possible, see if you can find out when and if he gets a new job somewhere. If he does, that helps a lot to cool off the ego.

Many years ago, I was placed in a similar situation where I had to fire a non-performer. To say the least, he was pissed, but not as threatening as the guy you described. About four months later, he saw me in a local store and yelled out, "Hey Mal!" I thought, "Oh crap, here it comes." He came over and said he had found a new job and that he wished I had fired him years before. He said he realized later he was just in the wrong job and was very happy in his new position. Not all of them will go like that, but who knows.

Good riddance, but watch your back - especially if the guy returns to the workplace. I hope you noted down the make and license plate of his vehicle. If you see it anywhere near work or your home, call the cops. He may be stalking you.

Good thing you had the cop present. He needed to see you were serious. HOWEVER, I assure you he has someone still working there that is on his side and will provide him with key inside information on what is going on. Unless he finds another job or a better job right away he will get pissed with the first missed paycheck. THAT seems to be the magic moment. He will blame YOU when the bills don't get paid.
I worked for a firm that fired you with a glowing letter of recommendation to take with you and nothing but praise if someone called.
Spooky when you think about it. Hope you don't work in a post office. :-)
