Just received a reply from Carl-Walther regarding P99. nothing new in particular, may help in some clarification ....

Dear Sir,

At the moment the P99 is being produced in one size only. A
sub-compact version of the P99 is in the process of development, however, we
are not able to give any further information at present.

In the year 2001 a limited quantity P99 has been produced in
cooperation with S&W (slide and barrel was made by S&W). This was a unique
action only and the guns are sold out already. Otherwise there have
been sold and being sold in the USA only P99's that are 100 % made in
Germany.

Best regards,
Carl Walther GmbH

If what Carl Walther wrote to you is true, it may be the case that the importer (Smith & Wesson) has no more inventory of the bastardized P99s, but they're definitely still in distribution channels and thus at gun shops. In searching for a .40 Auto P99 Military as a gift for my dad late last month (BTW, he has it already), and searching for a spare one for myself (in all-black), nine times out of ten, only the bastardized version was available.

And, while the latest ones may be 100% German-made with the "eagle over N" proofmark on the slide, barrel, and frame, the latest (IC-datecoded, meaning 2002 manufacture) importer etching on the front-right of the slide reads:

Smith & Wesson
Springfield, MA

I agree with Dr. Lunde. All I've found 9 out of 10 are the S&W versions. Did you get your father a German made P99?

I will correct the date code you put however. It should be AC not IC for 2002.

P99

P99, thanks for correcting the datecode. Yes, it should have been AC. And, about my dad's P99, it's of course a 100% German-made one. He had a choice of colors, and decided on the Military version, which are even harder to find right now as 100% German-made. The dealer I bought it from got it from Earl's Repair Service, and it supposedly came out of Earl's private stash, probably because its serial number's last three digits are 007. I am waiting for a range report from my dad.

Dr. Lunde,

That's cool about your dad's P99. Especially because of the serial number and that Earl gave it up. I like Earl. Sometimes he can be a little rough around the edges, but he'll usually go the extra mile to make you happy.

P99

BTW, my dad's first impressions of his P99 gift is that it is quite a nice pistol, and he's very much looking forward to using it. He bought a Sig Trailside for himself at about the same time, and picked it up yesterday as well. He shot that one today.
