unknown colt model

I have been trying to find the model of my Fathers WWII service revolver. On the barrel it has COLT D.A.45. This is on the side of the barrel, on top it has COLT PT FA MFG CO HARTFORD CONN ,under this is PATD AUG 5 1884 JUNE 5 1900 JULY 4 1905. The number on the frame is 185342B. It also doesn't chamber a standard colt 45 cartridge but uses one no longer then 7/8" long .

Does it look like this?

I am not sure. I think it may just be a Model 1909. These used a 45 Government round with a larger than normal casehead. It doesn't jibe with my references for the barrel markings for a WWI Model 1917 in 45 ACP. This doesn't mean that the barrel might or might not be the original. A picture or three would help.
