Universal Education

lISTEN,

We are all against mandatory registration and education (because class lists lead to registration). Why do we not propone universal education. 8th grade, everyone takes a basic firearms course. My taxes are paying more for some idiot mayor to ban guns then teach about them.

Ignorance is killing all of those children, not the guns. How many times are we going to here, "I thought it was unloaded," when they had no idea about basic handling or clearing methods?

I'd love to see a universal basic firearms course taught in school.
I can just hear the anti's now:

"If we teach our kids how to use guns, they'll just end up shooting each other"!

And the irony of it is that you would be hearing that from many of the same people that insisted that sex education wouldn't make kids promiscuous or that drug awareness training wouldn't turn them into addicts.

It is already mandatory in most of our homes.
I doubt that the current public educratic monster could successfully convey what to do if a young one found a wallet on the sidewalk with $500 and ID to find the owner. The moral relativity spouted today would boggle the mind in the number of possible "solutions" to this problem.

Teaching firearm safety in school would not be a bad option. I don't agree with requiring it for all students, but should be available for the taking. I ain't going to force anybody to do something they don't want to. Like handling firearms. I'm afraid in today's political climate this is probably a no go. If taught in schools I would have to question the knowledge of the teacher. Are they an actual firearm owner with experience, or someone that would be just reading words out of a book that doesn't want to be there. I also don't believe that everyone should have a firearm. Like I've seen mentioned in various posts, on various forums. We already have too many stupid firearm owners we don't need anymore causing F up's.

PB, I think you just argued against yourself:
"We already have too many stupid firearm owners we don't need anymore causing F up's."
Wouldn't that be an argument FOR firearm education? Not a flame but I don't see your perspective.
You don't HAVE to take sex ed. in school. Plenty of kids' parents have them opt out. As a teacher, I wouldn't mind seeing a firearm safety course in school. Personally, if I could get trained as a firearm instructor before hand I would be happy to teach the course. :D I have been around and owned firearms since I was a kid but wouldn't consider myself an expert. Plus, the thought of training and range time on the school's tab puts a smile on my face.
The local ROTC guys probably wouldn't mind doing the instruction, either. I don't see it happening any time soon, though. The curriculum would probably be designed to scare the kids into thinking that all firearms are little Terminators just waiting for a chance to jump out and kill them. Sigh.

I think we have a different intrepretation of what I said "I also don't believe that everyone should have a firearm. Like I've seen mentioned in various posts, on various forums. We already have too many stupid firearm owners we don't need anymore causing F up's.". This should have been a paragraph of it's own. I was thinking how some posts I've seen people say that everyone should own a gun, or make it mandatory to own one. I don't agree with this philosphy. One reason is some people no matter how many times they are showed the correct way to do something, they just don't, and won't comprehend. I do believe that any law abidng person should be able to own any type of firearm they wish. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I can see how it can be interpatated wrong.

PB: I also believe that there are some people who should not have a gun. They SHOULD, however, be ALLOWED to have a gun! There's a difference. If they then use it to screw up, punish them for the screw-up, not for the gun!

I remember a conversation with a lady from Taiwan. Because of the threat of Communist invasion, every kid in High School was instructed on rifle shooting. Not that the instruction was very good, they all went to the range and fired 5 shots. For closing her eyes, she got 7 hits! Despite their intensive firearms training, they didn't turn out to be mass murderers.

PB,
I agree in the idea that an M-16 and 500 rounds shouldn't be issued to every vegetable in the patch. There are a lot of people I know who are capable but aren't comfortable with firearms, don't know how to handle one, load/unload, or hit the broad side of a barn. I think most of that comes from ignorance. That was the point I was trying to make.
I also know some people who should be coated with foam rubber and only allowed to eat with plastic sporks because in any other condition they are a public health hazard. I see your point as well.
Peace.
