Loading 45 acp with 230 gr Hornady XTP's with unique powder, does anyone have a pet load for paper punching ? Hornady manual lists 5.2 to 6.2 grns. This is to be shot in a Glock 30s and a Glock 21sf.

For projectiles designed to expand, I tend to push velocities as high as pressures and recoil recovery will allow.

If you're just defending yourself against pesky feral targets who undertake hostile postures, making you feel fearful for your life, 5.8 - 5.9/Unique/225 - 230 LRN works well, as does the same powder charge with a 200 gr. SWC.

In my old S&W 4506, which is a very large frame 45, I use 7.0 grains for 1000fps and shoots the black out of a 50' NRA target.

I shoot LSWC's in my gold cup with 4.2 of Bullseye, but this is for jacketed in my Glock pistols, which might see duty as my CCW. I should have said that in my original post.

I've been using the "factory duplication load" from the 1970s Lyman manual, since the 1970s. 230gr jacketed, Unique 6.5gr vel 877fps is what that book says.

+1 re: what 44AMP said

I think 44AMP and I have the same vintage Lyman Reloading Manual, because mine says the same thing. I use a little LESS than 6.5 grains, but not because the load is excessive. I drop it to 6.2/Unique/230 because it's more comfortable to shoot all day.

Another great load from that manual is 6.5 - 7.2/Unique/200 SWC. The 6.5 gr. load is energetic but not unpleasant. The 7.2 gr. load is "Steppin' Dynamite", and should be approached with all deliberate caution (not to mention perhaps a heavier recoil spring?).

I like 5.0gn (target) and 6.0gn (IPSC way back when), but your gun isn't my gun, so my pet loads may or may not work in your gun with your mix of components.
Checking my manuals, I show start loads ranging from 4.8-5.9gn and MAX loads ranging from 6.0-7.0gn--thus showing that different guns and mix of components does effect things, so don't think you can just jump into someone else's pet load.

I've always used 6.5 Unique with a 230 gr. hard cast round nose. Regular primers. These are used in my Colt Government model 1911

For a good load for mixed brass and CCI 300 or RP 2 1/2 primers I shoot 6.1 grains of Unique with 230 XTP's. For my favorite brass that are for other than paper punching then I load 6.3 grain with RP 2 1/2 primers. CCI LP is just a bit milder with my loads. I've loaded up to 6.5 grains but a little more than I want to load.

Not looking to step into someones pet load, just curious to see what others are loading.
Thank you for the replies guy's

I've been shooting 5.7 grains of Unique over 230 grain Xtreme plated RN. It may be a little light, the cases get a bit sooty. Cycles my SR1911 just fine though.
