Unfired 5.5" Ruger Old Army Captured On 6/14

I lucked into an unfired 5.5" Ruger Old Army C&B revolver in a private sale yesterday. Since Ruger recently discontinued the ROA's, many people wish they had bought one previously including myself. Especially desireable is this 5.5" model.
I also received a good deal on a stainless R&D .45LC conversion cylinder that has separate firing pins for each chamber.
This ROA also included a Belt Mountain replacement cylinder pin that completely replaces the loading lever when shooting either the percussion or the conversion cylinder.
And for some inexplicable reason, I really like the "good numbers" that are on this ROA.

Now who could refuse to buy this ROA if they were given the same opportunity?

I have an unfired 5.5 ROA,with a R&D conversion.My question is,where can I get a belt mtn. pin? Thanks, Willie

I just decided that my next BP gun is going to be a ROA. I was going to get a Cabelas Rem. now I am going to save a little and get this.

Don't you mean 6/14?

Yes, by golly I did!

Not being familiar with the ROA, I was surprised to learn that the loading lever assembly is only held together by slip joints and will simply fall apart into 3 pieces when removed from the gun.
No wonder Belt Mountain came up with a simpler cylinder pin which I hadn't previously heard much about either. :)

If I remember right, (I can't check as wer are in the process of moving, so the gun is packed) The 5.5 inch Rugers don't allow the loading lever pin to come fully out to be replaced by the belt mountain pins.

Please feel free to prove me wrong with a pic, but I don't think my pin comes out.

Mine doesn't either although you can unscrew the ramming lever catch and remove it that way.

I rather like the fact that it doesn't fall out vs. the 7.5" model. Over the years I've often scratched my head in wonderment that Bill Ruger didn't improve upon the Remington's system and, in my view at least, produced an inferior setup. Everything else about the gun is better than a Remington but the base pin/rammer/lever setup is kind of cheap I think.

Regards,
Oly

I would go to the work of unscrewing my catch but I shoot the thing way more in BP than cartridge.

As far as the quality of the lever assembly, I agree and disagree with you. I actually like the ease with which the lever assembly comes apart for cleaning and it is a very strong lever for loading, no bending or breaking here. However, I do see a possible improvement in the cylinder switchout. I know the gun wasn't designed for that, unlike the remington.

arcticap that's a every nice C&B you have there. if you ever decide to send it to a new home. i would be very interested in it. just thought i would put it out there. you never know unless you ask...;)

I see that the catch needs removal which might be good to do because the gun is frame heavy enough for it's size and for holding its slippery white grips.
And installing the Black Mountain cylinder pin should help to lighten it up a little but it will be hard to tell for sure about its desirabilty until it's fired.
I have one BlackHawk with those gawdy looking Ruger black rubber grips but surprisingly they're supportive, comfortable and not slippery at all. Installing those are another option that I'm considering adding to this pistol for shooting purposes. But then it won't look nearly as Hollywood!
Thank you for your interest breed. It's like starting another moon mission, let's never say never! :D
