Uneven Parkerizing on 870P barrel?

Question, I purchased a used 870P barrel that is in excellent condition, no rust or pitting inside the barrel. My question is that I just had it re-Parkerized. It seems there that half the barrel had a lighter shade of Parkerizing than the other half. I thought that re-Parkerizing would take care of this but lo and behold, after being refinished, it still shows a slightly 2-tone look. Could it have something to do with heat treating? If you look at the barrel closely in the photo, you will see what I mean. Thanks! Any metalurgists out there?

Could be due to the finish on the metal (different smoothness)


Have you tried rubbing breakfree CLP or similar on the metal? That usually evens the color out on parkerizing, at least for as long as the oil is there. Remember - parkerizing doesn't protect the metal, the oil it holds does.
 
I had exactly the same problem on an 870 Police gun about 3 years ago.

I returned the barrel to Remington for a refinish, and it came back perfect.
 
That's a nice setup there, Kraigster. (I don't know that I've seen a sidesaddle on the right side before, though.)

I'm assuming that's a Trac-Loc sight on the front (and rear)?
 
No, they said the warranty covered it.
They didn't say WHAT the problem was, but indicated it was a factory screw-up.

Mine looked just like yours, with a very sharp demarcation between the lighter and darker portions.

The only difference was, on mine the line was about 1-2 inches closer to the muzzle than yours.

I got it back in a couple of weeks, and it was all the same color.

They definitely refinished it, since the choke markings are added after the gun is parkerized, and when I got it back, the markings were parkerized over.
 
This seems a common problem with these guns. Here's mine.

I have a second police barrel where there is a very slight difference in colour in about the same spot. It doesn't show in photos but it is noticeable if you look closely.
 
Harder metals will take less Parkerizing. A metal that's hard enough will take no Parkerizing.

My Mossberg 590 barrel has the same "feature" as the Remingtons in this thread, except the Remingtons look a lot nicer. My Mossberg is patchy.
 
Whatever the cause, it's fixable because Remington refinished mine and it's now all the same color.

Strangely, this is not something that appears on ALL 870's with a parkerized finish, just on some.
