Undercoating

Has anyone ever tried this on a poly gun grip? I picked up a can of spray auto undercoating today at Lowe's. I got a couple of pieces of scrap poly and sprayed a few coats. It looks and feels good. It's a very textured, rubbery finish that seems to adhere well. Feels good. Looks like it's made to order for custom grips.

What do you guys think?

use caution with some undercoatings because they don't fully dry so they tend to be gummy, especially when they heat up. The bed liner spray in a can tends to be a little more durable and usually dries better. It is an interesting idea that I would like to see some pics of.

No way! I have yet to work around an undercoating that was not gummy and sticky. Not to mention coming off on my hands. It's not meant to be handled.

This stuff seems to dry non-gummy on my test pieces. The heavier the coat, the more the surface is textured. I'll get some pics up later today.

I'll check the "mess" factor tonight. Meanwhile, here is a pic. The piece on the left is a case made of poly material and has three heavy coats on it. The piece on the right is sheet aluminum and has two light coats. The substance dries hard without much "cushion". However, it has a nice non-slip texture. It seems to adhere well and doesn't rub or scratch off easily.

OK...

I got a rag, wet it with Hoppe's #9, and rubbed the undercoating vigorously for about 15 seconds. The undercoating DID soften very slightly, but didn't melt or come off. Once the Hoppe's was wiped off, it returned to the original state. I believe if the solvent is used sparingly, and wiped off quickly, no permanent damage will be done.

I'm looking for something to coat the grip on my XD9SC. The Hogue and Pachmayer slip-ons make the grip too fat and the stick on rubbery panels are not quite enough. Am I hard to please or what? :o I haven't decided if this is the way to go yet, but I'm giving it serious consideration. I'll wait and see if I get any more ideas, comments, or advice from the folks on TFL.
