Under the seat? The Glove Box? The Trunk?

A few questions all rolled into one ...

Let's say you're going someplace but for one reason or another, you don't wish to bring your firearm inside (but you do want it for the trip) and decide to leave it in the car. It is a hot, sunny day and parking in the shade might not be available.

Taking into account the heat on the bullets and the gun's security, where is the best place to put it? In a lock glove box which might provide a little extra security (i.e., someone might not want to stick around too long trying to get it open) but where it also might be hotter or under the seat where it might be a little cooler but which might serve as an easier traget?

I'd say in the glove box. I don't think the interior of a vehilce gets anywhere near hot enough for it to affect the gun or ammo. I have never tried to see what temp the rounds "cook off" at, but I wouldn't be worried about it happening.

Sometime when I go to the range I need to make a stop or two on the way there or on the way home. I'm always worried about someone breaking into my car with my guns in there. So, here is what I do. On my car a nissan altima I have a lever on the trunk latch that I can flip that will disable the remote trunk latch inside the car. So I feel a little better leaving them in the trunk knowing the only way to get in there is to have a key to the trunk. Takes the easy way of breaking a window and then poping the trunk latch to acceswss the trunk away.

Better then nothing.

I lock mine in the center console. Haven't had a problem with the West Tex heat yet. A sun shade in the windshield helps reduce interior temps.

Since I have to go into the post office every work day, I installed a GunVault in my car. It runs about $180

but it does secure the handgun(s)plus my checkbook, wallet, etc. If you are not familiar with them, you can check them out at www.gunspot.com The vault has an electronic finger groove key pad and key access as well. It bolts into your car interior, takes up little space and if you pick the right spot to put it, it is inconspicuous.

In Kentucky, _without_ a CCW, a firearm has to be in the glovebox (not a console), loaded or unloaded, glovebox locked or not. Or in the trunk.

Also, IMO rapid fire or even slow fire causes the weapon and ammo, especially in a revolver, too become much warmer than in an auto. So a cook-off should not occur. However, anything is possible.

I imagine pressures will be substantially higher with sun-baked ammo though.

Any place in the shade should be completely safe. Direct sunlight is where the high temps are. I have kept cassettes and CDs in my car for years without any warping, but I always keep 'em in the shade.
