Under 21 means limited ammo for AR

I am 20 years old, and I have an AR...that I can not purchase ammo for anymore. Over the past week I have been to several shops to purchase 5.56/.223 and have been told I can not since it can be shot from a pistol (AR-15 pistol) I am absolutely heated that I spent 2k on a rifle I can not even legally purchase ammo for. I was also informed I am not allowed to purchase .22LR for my 10/22. It really bothers me that I can not purchase a Hi point carbine, a kel-tec sub 2000, a rugger 10/22, an AR, a mini m14, or anything else that will take a "pistol cartridge" in fear that I will not be able to obtain ammo.

( New Jersey....)

In most places they will ask "Is this for a handgun or rifle". You always answer, "for a rifle". I doubt there is any law anywhere that prevents you from buying ammo. It sounds like a store that has mis-interpereted the law. But then I don't know where you live. I've seen stranger things.

How long until you turn 21?

A general caution about talking about things on the internet that probably should not be discussed on the internet is in order here.

Have you thought about ordering ammo online? Is that legal in the area where you live? I know lots of us order ammo online and the friendly vendors ship it directly to our house. Don't do anything illegal.

The last time I was buying .22 LR, the idiot behind the counter asked me if it was for a rifle or pistol. I told her "both".

that's how it is here too. even at walmart they ask if it's for a pistol or a rifle. you should try explaining and if they insist that it's against policy then ask to talk to a manager. plus the 223 was designed as a rifle round long before it was a pistol round so that shouldn't even be an issue.
