ultrasonic cleaners

Ive been curious about these ultrasonic cleaners for gun cleaning. Does anyone have any experience with these? Im wondering if they work well, are they safe for all guns, are they worth the money? thanks

I don't know about for an individual, but for a shop they are well worth the cost. Consider that a good cleaning of, say, a Browning Auto 5, takes a couple of hours to disassemble the gun, clean it thoroughly, and reassemble. With the sonic tank, you take off the wood, dunk the gun, and hit the switch. In a couple of minutes, remove the gun, let it drain, oil/lubricate, and put the stock back on. The customer gets charged the same, the gun is just as clean (if not cleaner) and the shop makes more money.

I have used a ultrasonic cleaner for a couple of years for cleaning dirty handguns and for a prep to paint gun parts.
Mine is commerical grade used in dental labs. About the same size as the Lyman.

I've got the Lyman (medium size) and I've used it to clean my SS guns and it does a grand job. I also used it on a M28 S&W (that I believe was cold blued sometime in it's past) and it removed nearly all the finish. I'm leery of using it on blued guns now.

All I can say is that I used ours on many blued guns with no problem. I would have concern about guns with peeling nickel plating or guns that have been painted. I have no idea why it would affect cold blue unless it was the bath itself and not the vibration.

Slip 2000 sells a water-base cleaner that works well in a ultrasonic. You can also buy specialized solutions from Brownells.
