ok guys if they can make a 223 semi auto that weighs 3.9lbs, then why can't i find a bolt action 223 that weighs less than 5.5 lbs? does anyone make a bolt action(or any other action for that matter) rifle that is less than 4 lbs? i have had no sucess finding one these past couple days. it doesn't have to be in 223, but a short action (or extra short)rifle would be nice.

Ultralight Arms makes a bolt action in about any caliber you want that weighs under 5 pounds. They make their own actions that are sort of mini 700’s. Other companies make rifles just as light by milling away all the non stressed metal from existing actions. None are inexpensive.
You can get an affordable single shot TC Contender in 223 and have it weigh about the same. I remember somebody making very light single shots, about 4 pounds, but don’t know who.

Yeah, I'm kind of all slobbered up over the idea of 5-1/4 pounds of 7mm-08, myself. A retail of $1,189, IIRC, gives me a bit of pause, of course.

Colt defaulted on the Ultralite contract. Melvin is in control again. There are some Colt/SARCO Ultralite rifles out there I have only seen long actions though. Look for them to either be bargan basement priced or sky high.

The Browning bolt action Micro Hunter in .223 weighs 6 lbs. It has a 20" barrel and a scaled-down stock. Detachable magazine. I have one but have not had a chance to shoot it yet. Price was $580. Good luck with your search. L

Good to know that Colt defaulted on the Ultralite contract, I wondered why they didn't seem to be on display anywhere.

There was a recall on the Colt Light Rifle in 30'06 in Sep last year - bolt problems. It's posted on colts website in the Colt News section. guess that didn't help either.

Bullfrog. How does a .308 Win. rifle with a total weight of 5.0 pounds, loaded, sling, and scope sound? On a real rifle action as well, a Mauser. It can be done, but it ain't cheap. I can even see ways to make it even lighter.
All joking aside, I have that rifle, a Steyr Mauser, 1912 model, with a Leupold compact 4X scope, a Lawson mountaineer stock (thumbhole)19 inch barrel, and the gun does weigh exactly 5.0 pounds as she sits. If I were to have the side rails milled our, hollow out the bolt handle and mill a slot in that as well, I think it could be reduced by another .25 pounds. It works fine the way it is now, so it ain't broke, so I don't need to fix it. I love it at elevations above 9,000 feet while hunting. Recoil is no problem due to stock design.
