Ultimak scout rails are heat sinks...

So I have been told.

They are designed to place optics front of the receiver to give the user faster and better control during game time, or crunch time, when the time counts when you have to kill the target...

What is your opinion of the Scout rails for the MINI 14.

Is it peeps just trying to limit the capabilities of the MINI 14 so the AR looks more attractive???

Seems you never get good intel on these boards.

Pretty simple. The barrel is the hottest part of a rifle once it's been fired a few times. Any thermally conductive object (like, perhaps, an aluminum scout rail) will heat up quite nicely if close to the barrel. The laws of physics DO apply, even to Mini-14's.

Ive used Ultimaks on a couple of AK's since they first came out, and never had any problems with heat, even with the "cheap" optics. The guns have been shot to the point you couldnt touch the barrels, and the Ultimaks were warm, but not "hot".

If you want to feel hot, shoot a Springfield SOCOM with its steel mount and youll get a good idea as to the difference. Their steel mounts get hot fast, and stay hot for a long time.

From my experience with my AK's, I wouldnt hesitate to use Ultimaks other products. Having had a couple of Minis over the years, with their usually crappy mounts, and especially now, understanding the advantages to a good dot mounted low and forward, Id be all over the Utimak for it. If I ever get another M1A or M1 with standard profile barrels, ones going on them too.

I'm sure that's the answer.:D

Any thing metal put next to a heat source is going to get hot, whether it be the rail over the chamber or the frying pan you put on the stove. A heat sink isn't necessarily a bad thing. In some situations heat sinks are great things.

Ridge Runner: Interesting theory, but the REAL reason the AR platform FAR outsells the Mini is because there was a secret government agency that decided that the Mini was so awesome it would make all other guns obsolete, so they forbid Ruger to sell more than 50 per year. The fact that we have a free market where consumers can decide which products they want based on how those products perform makes no difference. The whole system was rigged so that the AR would be the only option available, and that is why most people have AR's instead of Mini's.

"Seems you never get good intel on these boards."

Aw, now, Magog, you've already gotten a ton of good intel!

But if you're not happy with the intel here...

Why compensate for heat? The Mini is bulletproof! I'm sure the claims about the Ultimak mount is an Internet hoax!

And I LOVE my DPMS LR-308B!

Magog, you're violating the KISS principle. Instead of all the wandering around, it's a lot better to ask:

1. Has anybody used the Ultimak on their Mini 14?

2. Were there any problems?

Proper phrasing of the question tends to control the utility of the answers...

I don't know about the mini 14 version of the ultimak but the AK one is a replacement gas tube... So yeah it gets hot. But with proper optics (like aimpoints) it is a solid mount.

You mean if the information dosen't fit with what the latest Call of Duty game/Nutnfancy video says its "bad intel"

I have one on my mini 14 tactical with a burris 1x red dot

2. Were there any problems?

None. Easy to install, and it's my favorite rifle now
