Three people have been arrested in connection with an attempted robbery at a Worcestershire post office after which one of the raiders was found dead in a getaway car.

West Mercia Police said the arrests were related to the attempted raid on the isolated Wolverley Post Office, in Wolverley.

During the attack, a struggle developed between one raider, Scott Martin Griffiths, and 50-year-old postmaster Richard Watkins. Mr Watkins stabbed the 28-year-old from Wall Heath, Kingswinford, West Midlands. Police have praised Mr Watkins for his bravery and say he is being treating as a "victim".
...
Officers investigating the incident said they would be speaking to Mr Watkins as a witness during the course of the day. Forensic examination of the scene is continuing.

The case has been compared with that of Norfolk farmer Tony Martin who was jailed for life earlier this year after he shot dead a burglar at his isolated farm. A jury found him guilty of murder.

Several residents said they believed Mr Watkins was justified in doing what he did.

Bob Harkness, 48, said: "I know Richard Watkins and he is a gentle considerate man. He was forced to react and protect himself and his property. It was a spur of the moment thing. If someone pulls a gun on you, you have no choice."[/quote]

Now, go to your room and stay put until you have learned your lesson. (While you're there, you may as well clean your guns.

Let's see if I understand this correctly.
1. Farmer shoots a burglar and is convicted of murder.
2. Postal employee stabs a robber who later dies and he is a hero.

What the hell is wrong with this picture?

I know that Miss D is politically incorrect. I shall look at her sternly and say in my best command voice "Welcome to the club!"

Given the UK knife laws it was a good thing the postmaster had a reason for a lock back knife. Those very evil in the UK.

About the guy who shot the burgular, unfortunately this dude had a history
of firearms troubles and a big mouth before
the incident. He seems justified in his actions from our point of view but for the Brits he was EVIL. ;(

Lockback blades are allso a no no in KA now from what I read. Can't carry one at all.

We have a criminal jury system which is superior to any in the world;
and its efficiency is only marred by the difficulty of finding twelve men
every day who don't know anything and can't read.

Isn't the difference obvious? One is protecting an instituion of the almighty State, while the other is merely protecting his home.

JimR, I think you hit the nail on the head--or the target in the X-ring, if you prefer.

plinker2, it's an animated GIF image that someone else created. I'm linking to it via the UBB {img} tag.

Glenn, I didn't know that. Figures. I guess knifings are way down?

A San Antonio PD officer told me that lockblade knives are illegal (to carry) in the city - as are sheathed non-folders - unless you can prove that knife is required by your employment.
