Ugly But Strangely Attracted

One night just flipping through my research and videos, I came across the S&W M&P R8. Now, I'm already a huge S&W M&P fan as I have a 40c and will have another in full size shortly. But in looking at the gun it stands out as ugly to me. I've shot my dad's GP100 and Blackhawk and I consider those some pretty nice revolvers. But the more I looked at the M&P R8 the more intrigued I became with it. I still think its ugly but I think someday, maybe this year, it'll find its way into my collection. What is everyone else's personal experience with this gun? Love it? Hate it? Do you like the 8 round capacity? How's the grip? Do you like it/hate it more than other revolvers you've handled and shot?

I have the 627 and the TRR8 (with a light and a red dot scope). Both are from the performance shop, and both are amazing revolvers. An eight shot .357 is about the coolest revolver you can get! I set my TRR8 up to look exactly like this one:

There is an industrial, Escape from New York beauty in these things. Smith & Wesson has drawn pretty lines in metal for a century and now they have come up with a new aesthetic for an old tool. Cool. I love it.

As far as the grip?... Thats up to you... As I said I have a M&P R8 wearing wood Mculick[sp] grips... It's basically a "N" frame round butt gun. So you can pretty much put any aftermarket grip configured for a RB N

I've got a 327pc 8 shot snubby--ugliest revolver I've seen except for the Rhino--but I love having 8 shots of .357 in a 21 oz concealable package.

I've always wondered that same thing Tom. It seems to me that all the most sensitive areas on a light are towards the back, away from the muzzle on a semi-auto. On a revolver however, this is right in front of the cylinder gap and probably not a particularly healthy place for sensitive electronics to be. :o

It is highly unlikely that venting gases from the cylinder will do any harm to the light. Those gases are moving close to 90° away from the light.

ugly is as ugly does.
If you need wiz-bang go with an auto.
If you want QUALITY shooting go with a classic revolver.
Don't try to mix the two.

I happen to like the look and the features that this pistol offers. The underbarrel rail gives options that have not existed on a revolver. It is a little futristic, but that is the appeal. It just looks like a BA! Thanks for this thread, now I am going to have to add another gun to the wish list.:p

Yes, the M&P R8 doesn't get a lot of pub. And there aren't many good reviews on it by quality people on Youtube. That's why I wanted to start it on here because most of the people on here are better than the 90% of people who post on YouTube. Most times its just a video of their personal opinion and they read from the brochure that's in the box. I like to see a little talking, opinion and factual, but also some shooting. I think that's why a lot of people love watching Hickok45 on YouTube, perfect blend of opinion, factual and shooting. The sense of humor helps too!

Keep coming with your thoughts on this gun!

I know very little about "moon clips", and I've never owned a revolver that uses them, so forgive my ignorance, but I thought they were for using rimless cartridges in a revolver (like the .45 ACP). Since the R8 shoots a rimmed cartridge, why does it need moon clips? Does the moon clip just double as a "speedloader" of sorts, and if so, can you use the revolver without the clip?

Ugly But Strangely Attracted

Kind of like an exotic dancer.

At least you didn't say butt ugly, or I'd take offense and have to load up 8 200g Corbon hard cast's, and shoot out your engine block.:D

One thing is, even though it's aluminum frame, recoil wasn't as bad as I thought it might be.

Glad I ordered it not knowing how it would shoot, love that trigger too.
