Uberti Sharps copy

My favorite gun shop has a used Uberti .45-70 that looks like a Sharps copy. Anyone have any experience with these. It looks very nice and I like the double set triggers and the octagon barrel. I'm trying to decide if I think it's worth a grand...

Go to Gunbroker and search for Uberti Sharps. Then, google around and see what new ones are currently selling for. I see that Able Arms has new ones for 1200-1500, but those prices vary with the wood. Nicer wood brings a nicer price.

You say it's your favorite gun store, which puts you in a good position. Go talk to the guy and see if he'll knock off a few bucks (or a few hundred) for a valuable customer. Before you drop the hammer on the checkbook, take a close look at the bore. Most of us who shoot Sharps rifles use black powder or BP substitute. Those powders are corrosive and I've seem lots of Sharps with pitted barrels. Surprisingly, pits in a barrel doesn't mean that it won't shoot. I've seen some pitted barrels that shoot very well, but it's something that's nice to know before you write the check.

If the bore's good and the wood's nice, I'd say you should offer them $750 and be ready to write the check. Without knowing specific model and features, it is hard to give an appraisal when the sights alone could easily be worth close to the asking price or nearly nothing.

I have their "Quigley" model. The gun is beautiful. The barrel is engraved "Pedersoli". Obviously they made at least the barrel. Maybe they are the same company? Anyway I put a MVA Soule Tang Sight on it and it is a very accurate rifle. I shoot Goex blackpowder loads, (500 gr) and it is joy to touch one off at a target 300-500 yards and see the looks on fellow shooters faces when the smoke clears. Use a blow tube and clean for black powder. Mine has the 32" heavy octagon barrel and weighs 13 Lbs. Recoil is not a problem with that weight to move. Buy it you'll love it. I paid about 1200 4 years back.

As I understand it, Pedersoli makes Sharps repros for Uberti. At least the barrel and action, I am not sure about the stock. Pedersoli is probably the best Italian repro Sharps.

(The Pedersoli Highwall is a Pedersoli barrel in a Uberti receiver. I think Pedersoli puts in the single set trigger for those so equipped.)
