I found Uberti 1873 cattleman 357mags for sale at $250. Are these good guns as I am getting into cowboy action shooting?

They are good guns. Though fully capable of digesting .357--or wouldn't say so--you'll likely be shooting mostly .38s, both for economy and pleasure of shooting...and especially downloaded .38s for CAS. One of the beauties of the .357 is this versatility between the two cartridges. You'll want to be sure to clean the chamber bores after significant .38 shooting before resuming .357, because of the carbon "ridge" that forms at the shorter (.38) case end. If not already familiar with the Colt SAA design these are based on, whether for regular (recreational) shooting or CAS, you'll "have" to load only five...via the time honored "load one, skip one, load four" method. Otherwise, loading six the firing pin will be resting over a live round's primer--particularly sensitive to the gun being dropped or an inadvertant whack on the hammer. Believe me, this is a needed safety mode regardless of what anyone tells you about other "safety" features the gun comes with, they are not adequate by themselves...ALWAYS load only five. The only Uberti this caution does not apply to is the Beretta (Stampede etc) variant--because of it's transfer bar design similar to New Model (post 73) Rugers.. Even so, I THINK CAS rules are still five rounds. Someone correct me there.
Edit...And, generally, you won't find a decent one for much less than $250--so yes, I'd agree - good buy.

I had an Uberti Buckhorn, minor problems with loosening screws, now have a Pietta 357, Cimarron prefers these over the Uberti's although sells both at comparable prices.Uberti's are imported whole, Pietta's are assembled by Cimarron in Fredricksburg, Tx.
