Uberti 1886 45/70

All,

Quick question to throw out there....I will be acquiring a new Uberti 1886 lever gun soon and will be working up loads for it and was wondering if the load data listed in my manuals for Marlin 1895's would suffice for my Uberti?

I'm currently using the Hornady, Lyman & Speer manuals.

My Lyman #49 lists the same loads for the Marlin 1895 as they do for the Winchester 1886 with a max pressure of 28,000 CUP

Doesn't your Lyman have a special section just for those two rifles?
 
My Hornday manual says no. Not to be used with antiques or modern replicas. Only with the Marlin 1895 as the pressures are held to 40,000 c.u.p. maximum. My Lyman says yes. I would follow recipes from the Lyman manual only. I would recommend you contact Uberti for an answer. I know you can fire the Hornady Leverevolution bullets from your Uberti because I emailed Hornady to see if I could use it on my Pedersoli 1874 sharps. They said yes because they load their bullets to SAAMI specs of 28000 c.u.p. pressure.
 
Now... here's something interesting. I've just gotten back into the .45-70 game, with a new Marlin 1895, so I've been reading up...

There is quite a bit of disparate information on the .45-70 and what goes in which rifle. My Speer #14 gives load data (capped at 28K CUP) for both the 1895 and the Browning 1886, my Hornady #8 gives load data (capped at 40K CUP) for just the 1895, and other data for the 1886 and everything else. Further, Hodgdon data, currently found online, just calls them 'Lever Action' loads. It interesting to note, even with a compressed charge of IMR3031 and a 300grn bullet, pressure is less than 30K CUP.

My previous .45-70 was a Browning 1886, and I loaded at the time out of the Speer book... so I was loading 55grn H322 under a 300grn JHP without problems.

OP, I would contact the manufacturer and find out what loads are supposed to be run in the Uberti. I would think modern lever-action loads would be fine, but there is only one way to be sure.
 
I did do some more research and according to a Uberti add you can safely use loads with a max pressure of <28K with the Uberti 86. Its a little hard measuring pressure here at the house so I guess I'm relegated to going off listed pressures in my manuals for the Uberti 1886?
 
That makes sense, and kind of what I was expecting them to say.

If you look at Hodgdon's online data, they have pressures with the load data, so you can use that, also. Just make sure you are looking at the right thing... CUP not PSI. Newer data is PSI, I believe. My Speer #14 and Hornady #7 did not give specific pressure data, just that it was specifically under the threshold for that type of load.
